This week's safety discussion: "Evaluating Risks and Identifying Hazards."

Delving into the core of our paddling pursuits, let's explore how our risk assessment shapes the outcome of whitewater endeavors. As paddlers, we make decisions on acceptable risks. Hazard recognition is pivotal to making a good assessment of risk. Understanding the hazards is sometimes hands on and involves a bit of luck that things go right. Share your experiences of close calls and near misses to enhance the collective wisdom and safety awareness within our community.

I'll go first.
This day I flat pinned after a drop which wasn't a big deal itself. Probably would've be just beat down and swim. My rescuer was on it but as he approached my situation flushed so to speak. I ended up in an body to stern pin with his leg being the stern pin point. You can see his leg in the picture. Pinning us both in place. Luckily he was able to free us after a couple tries. The picture below is the moment I struck the rock and locked us down. The position of my body though it looks as if I'm waving is the result of the speed and violence of the impact. If felt like someone did their best Pete Rose impression on my head. I can still hear the Crack. Other than a small tear in my drytop and a very bruised ego I was fine and decided to call it a day. 2019.
