I remember inshore trolling as a kid. That moment when we get a hit and the fish starts running. My dad dropped the speed. The drag on the Penn Senator starts singing and saltwater is spitting off the spool of mono. Even with washing down the reels at the end of the day the chrome developed pitting. Great reels though.

L**e your rod guides to prevent salt crystals or dried marine grime from forming and possibly interfering with your next cast.

You should at least hose off your rods after fishing, especially in a saltwater environment.

Minimize metal-to-metal fishing reel friction for as smooth and as accurate as a cast as possible for perfect placement of your lure.

The dedicated light tackle fisherman will cast hundreds of times to present the bait on the right spot and retrieve the lure in a way that attracts the target fish. That would be a shame if that spot is just out of reach or you experience a reel malfunction at the worst time like a short-lived sighting or a brief feeding frenzy. You know if you know.

Clean your reels. L**e your reels. Store them in a clean, dry place.

I remember as a kid checking out those Penn conventional trolling reels. The finish was aged by years of saltwater splash coming off of the retrieved mono and Monel wire. And the lures too, we used Rebel minnows, green and yellow nylon, squid over colored feathers too, but they all head metal heads. Those and the spoons and diamond jigs positioned to the right depth by the rod planer. Everything had corrosion even with regular wash down on the dock.

Reel care is worth it, but I don't think we l**ed with anything beyond the little tube of Penn reel grease we had along with the annual servicing at the tackle shop. And yes, I remember the tournament trophies from false albacore.

Fishing reel care is a mindset that goes along with boat care because swabbing the deck is not a dirty word, literally. Washing down the boat after a day on the water is just common sense. Wiping down chrome. Spraying the glass. It's all about protecting your investment. **eandprotect

Sand and grit. Salt crystals. Dried marine grime. Anything that is left on your metal reel parts is a potential problem. So yes, after fishing you should at least rinse off and wipe down the hardware because you know, dried up live bait stuck to your bail isn't a matter of pride.
