When Pain Shows Up as Withdrawal

Distance can feel safer than another disappointment.

Genesis 3:8–9 8
When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man[a] and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees. Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”

Henri Nouwen wrote that the deepest healing often happens not in isolation, but in the presence of someone willing to walk with us through pain.

"God is pursuing me even when I pull away."

When Pain Shows Up as Control

Control is often fear wearing a management badge.

Proverbs 3:5–6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Corrie ten Boom taught that we should hold everything loosely in our open hands, because it hurts far less when God pries our closed fingers apart.

"My control was once protection — now I choose trust."

Control rarely announces itself as fear.

When Pain Shows Up as Anger

Anger is often pain's loudest disguise.

Proverbs 29:11
"A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back."

"Anger is often grief's bodyguard."

"My anger is information, not my identity."

"Anger is rarely the root; it's usually the messenger.

What Have I Actually Learned?

Don't let insight fade; let it become a practice.

Deuteronomy 8:2
"You shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you."

C.S. Lewis observed that every time we make a choice, we are turning the central part of us into something a little different than it was before.

"Healing is a practice I return to, not a box I check."

Choosing Healing Over Survival

You don't have to keep functioning ; you can choose to heal

Jeremiah 30:17
"I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the LORD."

Henri Nouwen wrote that the greatest healing often begins the moment we stop pretending and start choosing honesty with God.

"I choose healing, not just survival."

The Difference Between Healing and Functioning

Getting through the day is not the same as getting free.

Proverbs 4:23
"Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life."

Henri Nouwen taught that true wholeness comes from facing our wounds honestly rather than managing them from a distance.

"I am willing to go deeper than surviving."

Signs You're Actually Healing

Theme: Healing leaves footprints; learn to recognize them.

James 1:4
"Let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."

C.S. Lewis noted that character is what we are becoming, gradually, through a thousand small choices.

Declare: Quiet progress still counts as real progress."

What Real Healing Looks Like

Healing isn't the absence of scars; it's the presence of new life.

Isaiah 61:3
To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the Lord has planted for his own glory.

Corrie ten Boom said that when we get too caught up in remembering the wrong we've suffered, we forget to remember the God who's near.

Declare: "The past no longer has the same power over me."

Jesus still had His scars, and they became proof of victory. (John 20:27)

The Cost of Just Functioning

Unhealed pain doesn't disappear; it leaks out somewhere else.

Psalm 32:3
When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long.

Brené Brown observed that we cannot selectively numb emotion; numbing pain also numbs joy.

Declare: "I refuse to let silence wear down what God wants to restore."

Functioning has a cost.

Healing pays it down.

Asking the Harder Question

Jeremiah 17:9–10
“The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.”

"Henri Nouwen taught that honest self-examination before God is the doorway most people avoid, yet it is the very place healing begins."

🗣 Declare: "Functioning was my survival; healing is my invitation."
