KAYAKING 101 NORTH CAROLINA!

To kick off National Safe Boating Week 2026, an incredible partnership came together to help new paddlers build confidence, learn lifesaving skills, and safely enjoy North Carolina’s beautiful waterways!

“Kayaking 101” is a partnership with North Carolina State Parks and Recreation, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the North Carolina Wildlife Federation , the Carolina Kayak Club and the ACA - North Carolina. They offered beginner-friendly kayaking safety classes at 13 locations statewide!

Classes were held at:

• Jockey's Ridge State Park
• Hammocks Beach State Park
• Carolina Beach State Park
• Falls Lake State Recreation Area
• Jones Lake State Park
• Cliffs of the Neuse State Park
• Jordan Lake State Recreation Area

• Lake Norman State Park
• Berti Beach County Park
• Lake Rim Park
• Lake Johnson Park
• Lake Brandt
• High Point City Lake Park

For only $15, participants received hands-on instruction from certified volunteer ACA-certified instructors — a training valued at over $100! Every location offered 15 spots, helping introduce even more people to safe and responsible paddling across our state. The training taught new kayakers basic paddling strokes and rescues. It covered trip planning, essential gear, and how to make it home safe.

A huge THANK YOU to our amazing sponsors and community partners for supporting Kayaking 101:

🌟 Frog Hollow Outdoors
🌟 Red Tail Outdoors
🌟 Dillsboro River Company
🌟 Cape Fear River Watch

Together, we’re building safer paddlers, stronger partnerships, and a deeper love for North Carolina’s waterways. 💙

South Carolina Paddlers are Getting out on the Water Safe in 2026

National Safe Boating Week 2026 kicked off with an incredible opportunity for 45 folks in South Carolina. “Kayaking 101” — a partnership between South Carolina State Parks the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and ACA - South Carolina!

This beginner-friendly kayaking safety event brought new paddlers to Aiken State Park, Black River State Park, and Chester State Park for hands-on training focused on confidence, preparedness, and on-water safety.

The training taught new kayakers basic paddling strokes and rescues. It covered trip planning, essential gear, and how to make it back home safe.

Led by certified volunteer American Canoe Association instructors, these $100-value classes were offered for just $15 — and every single session SOLD OUT!!! 👏

Thank you to Lowcountry Paddlers, Augusta Canoe and Kayak Club, Sun City Indian Land Paddling Club, and Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Commission for their support and to everyone who helped make this event such a success and to all the new kayakers taking their first step toward safe adventures on the water. Here’s to a fun, safe, and unforgettable 2026 paddling season!

My Alaska adventure concluded with spending 10 days in Haines working with Joe at SEAK Expeditions while he led an American Canoe Association Level 3 Instructor Certification Workshop. The instructor candidates were top notch. Haines is a beautiful little town at the northern end of the Inside Passage. Its either a long drive through Canada or a 5 hour ferry from Juneau. Snow-covered mountains, bears, humpback whales, otters, seals, sea lions, eagles, etc. You know, the stuff that makes Alaska awesome! If you decide to paddle Alaska, see Joe at SEAK Expeditions. Also, he holds an annual sea kayak symposium.

Prince William Sound did not disappoint. Wilderness First Responder Recertification, ACA Level 2 Kayak Certification Workshop, and guiding a trip to Shoup Bay. A busy couple of weeks! I am very grateful for the opportunity to work with Prince William Sound College and the local paddling crew. What an amazing place to visit! Shout out to the Totem Inn for a fantastic stay. Highly recommended if you stay in Valdez. Also, shout out to Pangaea Adventures for sponsoring part of my travel costs. I look forward to visiting there again!

Just a typical spring day in Valdez. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work at the Prince William Sound College Sea Kayak Symposium for the second year. Also a chance to renew my Wilderness Medicine credentials. It is definitely a different environment than SC in the Spring! Paddling in slush is quite exhilarating! The people are awesome here and so friendly.

What a great 2 first days of the 3rd Annual Wave Paddler Spring Gathering! Some great experiences training in the wind for the past 2 days. The wind is dropping, the air temperature is rising, and the surfing will be increasing. Surfs up!
