Dear KI Students and Families,
It is with great sadness that we share the news that one of our longtime instructors, Sensei Cathy McIlvaine, passed away Saturday, January 10th, 2026.
Cathy began her training at the Munson Karate Institute in 1993 at 43 years old, inspired after watching her son Brian take a few classes with Sensei Stuber. From the very beginning, she embodied the spirit of perseverance that defines our school.
She earned her first-degree black belt in 2004, and later achieved her second-degree black belt at age 70—a milestone made even more remarkable by the fact that she persevered through twelve surgeries along the way. Her determination was unmatched.
For decades, Cathy was a familiar and encouraging presence in our kids’ classes. She taught with patience, kindness, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impact on every student who trained with her. Many generations of KI students grew under her guidance, and her influence will continue to be felt in our dojo for years to come.
The celebration of life for Sensei Cathy McIlvaine will be held at the Living Water Methodist Church, 6262 Youngstown Rd., Farmdale OH 44417 on Thursday, January 15th. Calling hours are from 10:00 am to 12:00pm with a service to follow. The family has suggested that everyone wear something Christmasy or Christmas colors as this was her favorite time of year.
Cathy was an inspiration to all of us, and she will be deeply missed.
Thank you for keeping her family and loved ones in your thoughts.
