I highlight how a strong unit turn and staying relaxed under attack lead to better counters, why driving into a right-hander’s backhand body can be a poor target at this level, and how attacking the opponent’s dominant-side “chicken wing” creates opportunities. I also point out positioning decisions—like coming in on a high-bouncing kitchen ball and key technical fixes such as earlier split steps, compact swings, stable base, and softer grips on low volley dinks.

In this episode, I break down a 4.5 men’s doubles gold medal match to highlight the decisions and habits that separate under-4.0 players from 4.5+ players, focusing on transition game, shot selection, and playing high-percentage pickleball. I analyze deep serves and returns, quality third-shot drops and drives, smooth movement and split-steps through the mid-court, and the importance of soft resets when opponents attack instead of panicking. I point out dinking patterns like resetting middle when pulled wide, being ready to counter speed-ups, letting out balls go in transition (“shoulder-high let it fly”), and reading common patterns like forcing a wide ball to set up an erne. I also note a few moments where staying back or choosing safer targets could improve outcomes, even when the intention is right.
