We had a very long but good week last week. We hosted over at Glen Oaks Monday and finished 13th out of 17th. It was the first time any of our players had seen the course and it was a good experience for us as we had some good learning opportunities. The tournament itself couldn’t have went any smoother. This is always such great event we host and it gives players a chance to play at one of the top courses in the state of Iowa. Typically a 18 hole high school invite doesn’t start at 3 pm but the crew over at Glen Oaks made it happen for us as everyone finished right as the sun went down. Thank you Glen Oaks for having us.

Tuesday we had our JV metro 18 hole invite at Gardner. We finished 5th as a team and for 3 of our players it was there first time playing a competitive 18 holes. For 1 it was his first time playing 18 holes altogether instead of 9. Overall we were proud of each player keeping a positive attitude and bouncing back after bad holes.

Wednesday our varsity and JV/freshman team competed. Our varsity competed at Glynns Creek at North Scott’s 18 hole invite. We played much better and placed 9th out of 18 teams.

Later that day our JV reserves got to compete over at twin pines. It was the first time competing in a high school event for 5 of our players and as we expected they were nervous the first hole but once they got going they played well.

We do have the Parent Meeting at 7:00 in the Wash Cafeteria on Tuesday. Probably easiest entry would be through the gym entrance on the south side of the school,

Our Athletes of the Week for last week are:

Nathan Arnold, who is an 8th grader who played a lot of golf this summer and his shown his enthusiasm through the first two week of the season. He is showing a lot of promise and we can't wait until his freshman year when he will start beating our opponents

Carter Hamilton, who is a junior. He played in an 18-hole JV meet and in the freshman/JV2 meet last week. He filled in last minute on the freshman meet, even though he's a junior and was eager to do so. He works hard every day and keeps getting better with his game

Owen Conway, who is a sophomore. Owen played in the first varsity meet on a course he'd never seen before and did a very respectable job in lousy weather. Though he didn't meet his own standards for that experience, he went right to work and shot our low round of 85 in the 18-hole JV meet this past week. He's got a very adult, great attitude about his golf game.

Connor Fitzgerald, who is another sophomore. Connor worked very hard at his golf game this summer just like he has in the time that he's been part of our team. He posted scores of 79 at Bunker Hill and at Glen Oaks and is playing #3 on our improving varsity team Connor will do anything and everything that he's asked and to make himself a better golfer.

Yesterday we shot a 314 as a team, finishing 11th out of 15, with very rainy and wet conditions. As a team, it was a great test of our mental aspect. The boys handled it well and it was good learning experience for 2 of our players that got to play in their first MVC Super meet. We also had one player shoot 70 that was good enough to finish tied for 4th out of 90 players. He wears a bucket hat and he might be on to something. Overall we were proud of the boys.

Athletes of the Week for last week:

Truman Kasper - this 8th grader has hit the ground running. He shows a lot of promise and is going to be able to play in high school meets this season, 1st 8th grader in the 68 year history of Washington HS. He played in tournaments this summer and has shot 43, 45 and 48 in practice.

Miles Stastny - A freshman and our only lefthander, he has shown good skills and a great work ethic already. He may be our best freshman. He has posted 46, 51 and 53.

Ethan Graw - This junior played a lot this summer and has worked hard to improve his game. He should be a stalwart on our JV team and may push for some varsity time soon. Great attitude.

Cal Slessor - Cal is being the leader we need on our young team. He has done good things as our captain already, had a great summer with many rounds and tied for 4th in the MVC Super Meet out of 90 golfers yesterday. The man in the bucket hat can play this game!

We apologize for the miscommunication with practice yesterday, we are still working on getting every players contact email information.
If there is a player who did not get the email yesterday please come see Coach Goettel or Coach Hubbs after their scheduled practice today. Hope to see everyone at practice today!

Congratulations to our very own Lilly Belle Barker! She is a finalist for the Gazette’s Female Athlete of the Year!
Not many athletes make state appearances, but less are able to do it in all four sports! While still being one of the top of her class!
