I had to field dress my B Zone buck and carry the whole thing out on my own. That meant I wasn’t exactly standing around the mountain taking my time making perfect cuts. I had a pack to fill and miles of country to cover.

So when I got home, I turned the majority of that buck into jerky.

It turned out great, so I put the recipe together and posted it on the Grit Knives website.

If you’ve got some venison in the freezer and want to make a batch yourself, the recipe is up now.

I’ve been spending some time at the workbench getting the custom leather sheaths finished for the Hunter Scalpel.

These are handmade and designed to keep the scalpel and spare blades together, so everything stays organized when you’re out in the field.

I’ll be adding the new batch to the website later today, so the Hunter Scalpel will be back in stock.

A little more work at the bench, then they’re headed your way.

After the epic adventure, there wasn’t much time to sit around and soak it in. I got straight to work processing the buck.

The freezer is filling up, and I’m almost finished with the euro mount. A long day in the field, followed by a long night at the workbench.

That’s the other side of the hunt. The adventure doesn’t end when you walk out of the woods.

Opening day of dove season in California, and my first time ever hunting doves.

I managed about half a limit, which wasn’t bad for a first go. I got plenty of practice on moving shots, plenty of misses, and hopefully a little better with every bird that came flying by.

The number of birds wasn’t what I’ll remember.

I got to spend the day hunting with a high school friend and his dad, a guy I’ve known for 36 years. And somewhere between the shooting, the birds flying overhead and sitting around talking, we started pulling old stories out of the archives.

That’s one of the things I love most about hunting. You go out looking for an animal, and you come home with stories.

Some are new. Some are 20 or 30 years old. Some you’ve heard before but somehow become funnier when you’re standing in a field with the same people who were there when it happened.

The birds eventually become a number in your notebook. The stories stick around.

The Agent just got a little more useful. Every one now comes with its own leather sheath, giving you a clean, secure way to carry it while adding a little old-school craftsmanship to the package. Small knife, complete setup.

I’ll be at the Carmel-by-the-Sea Farmers Market tomorrow from 9 to 2.

I’ll have all my handmade leather goods with me, including wallets and some of the newer pieces I’ve been working on in the shop.

I don’t talk about the Beckey Carabiner nearly enough.

It’s one of those simple pieces of gear I use all the time. Clip your keys to your belt loop, toss them in the truck, and know exactly where they are.

Nothing complicated. It just works, and honestly, those are usually the products I end up using the most.

Week three of deer season and I’m still grinding.

Spent the whole weekend out there and saw some great elk, a bunch of pigs, and plenty of deer. I just couldn’t close the distance on a buck.
The freezer is already full, so there’s no pressure. I’m just enjoying the time in the field and waiting for the right opportunity.

Still hunting. Still learning. Still looking.
