4 things your doctor probably didn't tell you about lifting after 60.

1. Losing muscle every year after 60 is common — it is not normal. It is untreated.
2. Heavier weight at lower reps is usually easier on the joints than light weight for high reps.
3. Balance work prevents more hospital visits than cardio ever will.
4. Starting at 70 still works. The research is clear and the members on our floor prove it every week.

Nobody is too old. They've just never been shown how to train around what's actually going on with their body.

Can you stand on one leg for 10 seconds with your eyes closed?

It sounds like a party trick. It's actually one of the strongest predictors of how the next 20 years of your life will go.

Three simple tests you can do at home this week:

1. Single-leg stand — 10 seconds, eyes open. Then 10 seconds, eyes closed. Both sides.

2. Sit-to-stand from a chair — no hands, 5 reps in under 12 seconds.

3. Heel-to-toe walk — 10 steps in a straight line without stepping off.

If any of these are hard, that's not a reason to feel bad. It's information. All three are trainable in 8-12 weeks with the right program.

Falls are the number one reason people lose independence after 65. They are also one of the most preventable things in aging.

Three workouts a week is plenty if you stop wrecking the other four days.

Most people we talk to in their 30s think they need to train more. They don't.

They need to sleep more than 6 hours.

They need to walk on the days they don't lift.

They need to stop treating Friday and Saturday like a reset button on every bit of progress they made Monday through Thursday.

The gym isn't the problem. The other 165 hours in the week are.

Fix one off-day before you add another training day.

She retired with arthritis and a pacemaker. Hands that hadn't felt right in years.

She wasn't looking for a transformation. She was looking for less pain and better cardiovascular health.

So we started from scratch. Different angles. Different grip. No ego, no rush.

The scale moved 2 lbs in 8 weeks. She lost 3 inches off her waist.

If you've been training, eating better, and the scale is barely moving — you are not failing. You are measuring the wrong thing.

Muscle is denser than fat. Water shifts day to day. Sleep, stress, and your cycle all move the number 2-4 lbs in either direction for reasons that have nothing to do with progress.

What we actually pay attention to with members in their 30s and 40s:
- Waist measurement
- How clothes fit
- Energy at 3 PM
- Strength on a few key lifts
- Sleep quality

The scale is one data point out of five. Stop letting it run the whole show.

Just another regular day at Hammerhead — where a trainer decides to squat 295 lb on a Tuesday night at 9:48 PM.

Nobody else in the gym when it happened. No music cued up. Just the bar, no spotter, and a clean lockout.

The people running the floor here train like they mean it. That's the standard.
