UPDATE: The US Air Force has confirmed that all eight people aboard the B-52 Stratofortress that crashed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday were killed, the deadliest crash involving the bomber in more than 40 years.

The aircraft went down on a routine test mission shortly after takeoff, at 11:20 a.m. local time. At an afternoon news conference, Col. James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing, told reporters, "We lost eight great Americans." The base had said earlier that initial indications were the crash was not survivable.

A World War II bomber crashed deep in the Papua New Guinea jungle, killing nine crewmen and leaving only one survivor. Decades later, that survivor returned to the same jungle — not for revenge, not for glory, but to bring his brothers home.
In June 1943, U.S. Army Air Force 2nd Lt. Jose L. Holguin was serving as navigator aboard a B-17E Flying Fortress known as “Naughty But Nice.” The bomber was flying a dangerous combat mission over the Pacific when it was attacked by a Japanese night fighter.
Moments later, the aircraft was falling out of the sky.
The B-17 lost power, spun out of control, and crashed into the dense jungle of New Britain Island, near Papua New Guinea. Nine of the ten men aboard were killed.

According to U.S. Central Command, the Apache went down near the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters close to the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important and sensitive waterways in the world.

The crash happened on Monday, June 8, 2026. Both crew members were recovered by American forces within approximately two hours and were later reported to be in stable condition.

Before the F-117 Nighthawk became a legend of stealth warfare, one of America’s most secretive jets found itself in a helpless position — nose-down on a runway in New Mexico.

In 1997, one of America’s most famous stealth aircraft suffered an embarrassing and dramatic runway incident at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico.

A Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk, the sharp-edged black jet once hidden from the public for years, came to rest nose-down on the runway after its front landing gear failed during landing. Without the nose wheel to support the aircraft, the front of the jet dropped onto the tarmac, leaving the stealth aircraft stranded on its belly as ground crews rushed in to recover it.
