Happy National Girls and Women in Sport Day! Today, I’m reflecting on my own journey as a female athlete with a disability, and how far we’ve come—and still have to go—in making sports accessible, inclusive, and empowering for women and girls like me.
I didn’t always see many athletes who looked like me, and I certainly didn’t see many women with disabilities competing at high levels. But sport became my platform for breaking barriers, proving to myself and others that limitations are meant to be challenged, not accepted.
I’ve had to fight harder for the opportunities I’ve been given, but that’s what makes every achievement, every race, every victory so much more meaningful. Being a female athlete with a disability means pushing through obstacles—both physical and societal—and using sport as a tool for advocacy, inclusion, and visibility.
Today, I celebrate not only my own journey but the incredible resilience and strength of all women and girls in sport, especially those with disabilities. We’re not just participating—we’re changing the game. Let’s continue to inspire and support each other in this journey of breaking barriers and making space for everyone in the world of sport.
