The latest polling shows Gavin Newsom gaining traction on the national stage, with his numbers boosted as he takes a more aggressive position in challenging President Donald Trump. From pushing back on immigration crackdowns to criticizing Trump’s economic and cultural agenda, Newsom has emerged as one of the most vocal Democratic governors standing in direct opposition to the former president.

When President Trump called Gavin Newsom “Newscum” earlier this year, the California governor likened him to a seventh-grade bully and refused to engage.

These days, Newsom is starting to act as the aggressor.

The California governor has amped up his social-media presence, mimicking Trump in stream-of-consciousness, all-caps posts on X. He recently called the president a “snowflake,” accused him of wearing makeup, and highlighted Trump’s bad polling.

Newsom is also the first leader of a Democratic state to move forward with a partisan effort to redraw congressional maps to eliminate five GOP U.S. House members.

The move is a response to the Texas legislature pursuing its own unusual effort to add five more GOP congressional seats at Trump’s request.

The redistricting effort and satirical posts come as the governor warns of a democracy in peril under Trump. He has accused the president of having “authoritarian tendencies,” and said Trump is working to consolidate power so he can thwart the Constitution.

Newsom has said he has no choice but to fight fire with fire.
