Great weekend for our JV & Varsity at Northwood for the first of three team camps. Finished 10-4 winning our bracket as well as the overtime tournament. Friday night we spent a couple hours talking about leadership, followership, standards and expectations
Started with an exercise of teamwork and communication. We divided our guys into 4 groups (9th-12th grade) their mission was to make the tallest free standing tower constructed of spaghetti, masking tape, string, and the only rule was the top of the tower had to be a marshmallow. We ended with a debrief where each group talked about who stepped up to be a leader, did everybody have a voice, how were disagreements handled. It was a very good exercise.
Next we talked about the importance of standards and expectations. In this exercise each players was told they had 90 seconds to draw a pig and tape it to the wall. After round one, we again debriefed and had a discussion how or why everybody’s pig was significantly different from each other. In round two everybody had 90 seconds to draw a pig but this time the instructions were to draw a pig that had four legs, two ears, a tail and a snout, and was pointed to the left as you can imagine this time all of the pigs looked very similar to each other. We connected basketball and the importance of all five players on the floor, knowing what needs to be done with very specific detail in every single case
Lastly, we did a senior servant, leadership exercise, in this project we had our seniors do breakout groups with our underclassman and tackle some of the things our program puts a premium on such as toughness, both physically and mentally, communication, performance, not just inside the lines, but outside and playing for each other.
All in all, it was a great weekend on the court, but also gave our 22 kids two days to bond and start the process of becoming one unit
