The Power of Family in Sports

By HETV Media

In today's sports world, it's easy to measure success by wins, losses, championships, and trophies. But the truth is, the strongest programs aren't built on scoreboards—they're built on culture.

Family in sports isn't determined by how many games you win. It's determined by who stays committed when things get hard.

Anyone can celebrate together after a victory. Real family is revealed after a tough loss, a disappointing season, or adversity that tests the foundation of a team. That's when culture shows its true colors.

The question every program must ask itself is simple: Are we in this for the right reasons?

If the focus is solely on individual success, personal agendas, or what's best for one player or one family, the culture will eventually crumble. Selfishness may create short-term success, but it rarely produces something lasting.

Great cultures are built by people who genuinely care about one another. They celebrate each other's victories, support one another through struggles, and remain committed to the mission regardless of circumstances.

Authentic family means putting "we" before "me."

It means showing up during the good times and the bad. It means trusting the process, staying aligned with the program's core values, and believing in something bigger than yourself.

The most special experiences in sports aren't always championships. They're the relationships built along the journey. They're the memories created through sacrifice, commitment, and shared purpose.

When players, parents, coaches, and communities unite around common values, something powerful happens. The culture becomes stronger than any individual. It becomes sustainable.

And that's where the magic lives.

Because in the end, banners fade and records get broken. But a true family culture leaves a legacy that lasts forever.

HUNTSMAN HIGHLIGHT COACH

Coach Jaye Randolph

At Huntsman Elite, we’re blessed to have some incredible coaches who pour into the next generation far beyond the game of basketball. Today, we want to recognize one of the absolute best — Coach Jaye Randolph.

Simply put, Coach Jaye is the real deal.

He’s more than a basketball coach. He’s a teacher. A leader. A role model. An encourager. A mentor. And one of the most knowledgeable basketball minds you’ll ever be around.

Some people choose coaching as a profession. Others were born to do it.

Coach Jaye was born to coach.

His ability to connect with players, teach the game, build confidence, and develop young people is truly special. He understands that basketball is about much more than wins and losses. He sees the big picture. He understands that every practice, every conversation, and every lesson is an opportunity to impact a young person’s life.

Coach Jaye lives out the Huntsman Elite core values every single day:

God. Family. Toughness. Hard Work.

Those aren’t just words to him. They’re principles that guide how he coaches, leads, and serves others.

This year, Coach Jaye was rightfully inducted into the Huntsman Elite Hall of Fame as a coach — a recognition that reflects the countless hours, sacrifices, and lives he’s impacted throughout his coaching journey.

The players who have been fortunate enough to play for him know exactly what kind of man he is. His influence reaches far beyond the court and will continue to be felt for years to come.

Coach, we appreciate your commitment, your leadership, your wisdom, and your heart for serving others. Most importantly, we appreciate the way you use your platform to impact young people for the glory of God.

Thank you for all you do.

We appreciate you, Coach.

— Coach Tray Huntsman

Huntsman Black 13U Falls Just Short Against Kentucky Premier

HUNTSMAN BLACK 13U SHOWS HEART IN ONE-POINT BATTLE

By HETV Media

Sometimes the scoreboard doesn’t tell the entire story.

Huntsman Black 13U battled adversity, fought through an early deficit, and nearly completed an impressive comeback before falling to Kentucky Premier, 46-45, on Sunday.

Kentucky Premier came out firing and opened the game on an 11-2 run, putting Huntsman Black on its heels early. But instead of folding, the young squad responded with toughness, resilience, and determination throughout the remainder of the contest.

Led by Griffin H. 14-point performance, Huntsman Black chipped away at the deficit possession by possession. Griffin also connected on two three-pointers and provided a steady offensive spark when his team needed it most.

The second half belonged to Huntsman Black, as they outscored Kentucky Premier 25-19 while moving the basketball with purpose and energy. The team finished with nine assists on 18 made field goals, showcasing the unselfish style of play that continues to define this group.

Inside the paint, Huntsman Black was highly efficient, converting 16-of-27 two-point attempts and consistently attacking the basket.

Cole W added 10 points and was a force on the boards with six rebounds. Tanner P also grabbed six rebounds, helping Huntsman Black compete physically against a tough opponent. Additional scoring came from Darius C (7 points), Zayne D (5 points), Sharif M (2 points), Tanner P (2 points), Jackson F (2 points), and Emanuel R (1 point).

While the Bulldogs came up one point short, the effort, fight, and togetherness displayed throughout the game were impossible to ignore. After trailing by nine early, Huntsman Black continued to battle until the final buzzer and put themselves in position to win.

Final Score: Kentucky Premier 46, Huntsman Black 45

“The result wasn’t what we wanted, but the toughness, growth, and refusal to quit showed exactly what Huntsman Basketball is all about.” 🏀💪

Legacy Is Built Through Commitment

In today's world, commitment seems to be a rare thing.

People change jobs. Kids change teams. Coaches change programs. Families move from place to place searching for the next best opportunity.

But every once in a while, you get to experience something special.

You get to witness what happens when people stay committed.

One of the greatest blessings of Huntsman Elite Basketball has been the opportunity to walk alongside young people for years—not weeks, not months, but years.

We have players who first walked into our gym as second graders. They were tiny. Their basketballs looked bigger than they were. They couldn't make a layup with their weak hand. Some struggled to dribble. Some lacked confidence. Some were simply looking for a place to belong.

Fast forward to today, and many of those same kids are now college students.

Some are sophomores in college.

Some are preparing for careers.

Some are coaching younger players.

And some still come back to train.

Think about that for a moment.

A relationship that started when they were 7 or 8 years old has continued into adulthood.

That's not basketball.

That's legacy.

Legacy isn't built in a tournament weekend.

Legacy isn't built through social media posts, trophies, rankings, or championships.

Legacy is built through years of investment.

It's built through thousands of conversations.

Thousands of workouts.

Countless rides to practices and tournaments.

Victories celebrated together.

Failures overcome together.

Lessons learned together.

At Huntsman Elite, we've always believed we are building something bigger than basketball.

Basketball is simply the vehicle.

The real mission has always been helping young people become the men and women God created them to be.

We've watched players grow from little kids into leaders.

We've watched them overcome adversity.

We've watched them develop confidence.

We've watched them graduate high school, attend college, start families, and begin pursuing their dreams.

And perhaps the greatest compliment a coach can receive is when those same players continue to call, text, visit, or come back through the doors years later.

Because it means they know they matter.

It means the relationship was real.

It means the investment was genuine.

The older I get, the less I care about trophies and the more I care about impact.

Don't get me wrong—we love to compete.

We love to win.

We love watching our teams succeed.

But banners eventually collect dust.

Trophies eventually get put in storage.

Records eventually get broken.

Relationships last forever.

When a player you've known since second grade walks into the gym as a college sophomore and asks if they can still get a workout in, that's special.

That's a reminder that what we're building matters.

That's a reminder that commitment still matters.

That's a reminder that legacy is never about one season.

It's about consistently showing up for people year after year.

For every player, parent, coach, and family that has trusted us over the years, thank you.

Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your story.

The truth is, you've been a huge part of ours.

And as we continue moving forward, our mission remains the same:

Faith.Family.Toughness.Hard Work.

Because we're not just building basketball players.

We're building a legacy.

I want to take a moment to recognize two men who truly do this for the right reasons: TC Underwood and Kevin Shockey.

Like anything in life, there's a good version and a bad version of it. In the AAU basketball world, these two men represent the good version of what loyalty, commitment, and servant leadership look like.

They trusted the process.

They didn't chase the smoke.

They didn't jump from opportunity to opportunity looking for shortcuts.

They stayed loyal to the vision and committed to our core values: God. Family. Toughness. Hard Work.

This team was originally formed when many of these players were in the 4th and 5th grades. Like every team, there have been a few roster changes along the way, but the foundation has remained together for nearly five years.

TC is one of the most loyal people I know. He's loyal to his players, loyal to his families, and loyal to the kids God has placed in his path. He's not chasing trophies—he's chasing development. He's investing in young people and helping shape their future.

Do we play to win? Absolutely.

Do we compete to dominate? Of course.

But that's only a small part of what we do.

This is actually TC's second go-around with Huntsman Elite. Over the years, he's spent nearly two decades coaching within our program. He's a Huntsman Elite Hall of Fame inductee and someone we're incredibly grateful for.

The thing about TC is that he absolutely has the ability to be a high school varsity head coach. I'm not sure he always gets the recognition he deserves, but I can tell you this—he has impacted the lives of countless young people over the years, and our community is better because of it.

Kevin Shockey deserves that same recognition. Kevin has been a steady, positive influence who has consistently poured into kids, supported families, and represented everything we want Huntsman Elite to stand for. His commitment, humility, and willingness to serve have made a lasting impact on our program and the athletes he coaches.

Today, I simply wanted to recognize my brothers, my friends, and two men who have helped build something special.

TC Underwood and Kevin Shockey—thank you for your loyalty, your sacrifice, your leadership, and your commitment to our kids.

We appreciate everything you've done and continue to do.

The trophies will collect dust. The impact you've made on these young people will last forever.
