MHSA Class A B State Swim
Great Falls February 12 to 14
In Class A B, prelims determine the top 6 who return to race for placement in finals. Places 7 through 12 are set after prelims. Top 10 still matters. But only the top 6 swim again the next day. AA advances 12. A B advances 6. It is tight. It is earned.
The Maroons handled the stage the right way all weekend.
Thursday opened with the 500 free following the parade of teams. Joe Bradshaw finished 10th overall in the boys 500 free. In A B, that means placement was secured after prelims. A strong state finish.
Morgan Hardy competed in the girls 500 and an unfortunate disqualification was called. It was handled with maturity and class.
Friday prelims were loaded.
The Girls 200 Medley Relay placed within the top 6 and advanced to race again in Saturday finals.
In the Girls 200 Free, Morgan finished 4th and Tessa 6th in prelims, both earning a return swim in the championship final.
Tessa placed 1st in prelims in the Girls 100 Breaststroke and carried the top seed into finals.
The Girls 4 by 100 Free Relay placed 5th in prelims and advanced to the top 6 final.
On the boys side, the 200 Medley Relay placed in the top 6 and returned Saturday, finishing 7th overall in the state after finals scoring was completed.
The Boys 4 by 100 Free Relay finished 7th overall as well.
Saturday was packed. Over a thousand swimmers, coaches, officials, and fans filled the building. In A B, every prelim swim is essentially a semifinal. There is no cushion. You are either top 6 and back tomorrow, or your place is set.
Shamus Peck finished 7th overall in the Boys 200 IM and 8th overall in the Boys 100 Fly. In A B, those placements were locked in after prelims.
Connor Hardy placed 9th overall in the Boys 100 Backstroke. Another top 10 finish at state. In this format, that means he was just outside the top 6 cutoff in prelims, but still among the top competitors in the entire classification.
Top 10 in Class A B is significant. Only six get another swim. Everyone else is done after prelims. That is the structure.
Tia Thompson finished 11th in the Girls 100 Breast and 13th in the Girls 200 IM while also contributing to relays that earned top 6 swims.
Morgan and Tessa competed in championship finals after earning top 6 prelim swims.
This team competed in a format where margins are small and opportunities are limited. And they represented Butte Central with discipline and pride.
