Welcome to SAMIR

We are the home of scarce South African military manuals and documents of all kinds. In the following pages you will discover listings of South African military manuals, guides and other documents that are hard to find. Our sincere hope is that you will rediscover information that has been lost to researchers and historians of

South African military history. This missing and scarce information enables deeper exploration at a technical level and effectively helps open up the doors of the past. Our manuals, guides and other documents formed part of the old pre-1994 South African Defense Force. These are scarce and hard to come by, especially outside South Africa, and cover a gamut of subjects including survival, tactics, military leadership, technical guides, training manuals, and even a military hymn book. As such these documents serve as a valuable historical repository of “lost knowledge”.

As promised... something about the Poor Bloody Infantry: A wheeled 4x4 1.5t mine-protected Buffel armoured troop carrier, the mainstay of the motorised infantry. An infantry company would typically have had 13 or 14 of these, four per platoon plus the command (and 2IC) Buffels.
Its 6-cylinder water-cooled diesel Atlantis Diesel Engine delivered 93 kW (125 h.p.) at 2800 rpm, providing a power/weight ratio of some 15.19 kW/t. The vehicle was capable of 96 km/h on-road and 30 km/h off-road. It carried 200 litres of diesel, with a fuel consumption of 27 liters per 100 km, giving it an operating range of 1 000 km.
The transmission was synchronised with 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, a transfer box integral with its gearbox; allowing in-motion changing between 4x4 and 4x2 drive; with equal power distribution between front and read axles.
It could also carry 100 litres of water...

ADMIRALS WHO VOLUNTEER: Two x retired Rear Admirals (JG) mount the submarine SAS Assegaai to continue work today. The engineering Kevin Watson and industrious Digby Thomson about to enter the submarine via the forward hatch from a dizzy height.
What would we have done without these passionate, enthusiastic men - volunteers. Thank you R Adm Hanno Teuteberg for your inspirational leadership during a critical phase, R Adm (JG) Arné Söderlund who has been the driving force behind this incredible project for so many years and of course Capt John Lamont, one of the first SAN submariners and original commitee man.

This has to be one of the greatest peace time operations ever. A group of former Submariners got together and decided that they would not allow one of the former navy subs to be cut up. From the most senior Admiral to Seaman they worked like Trojans to raise a huge amount of money. They begged and borrowed. Tomorrow that sub the only remaining Daphne Class in Africa will be moved to its final resting place. She will become a musuem. The only Sub musuem in Africa. It’s cost blood, sweat and tears. The brothers have stood together and their vision is now to become a reality. I am grateful to Admiral Hanno Teuteberg and all the members who have worked with him on this incredible project. I visited the dockyard a month ago and the Sub was still on the syncrolift. It’s been and incredible amount of work to move this sub.
Proud of this team. GO NAVY !!!!!
