This past weekend, our Burnet Bulldog and Lady Dawg Cross Country teams made the trip down to Corpus Christi to compete in the 2026 Islander Splash Invitational. We raced in the Blue Division (3A-4A schools) against a large field of schools from across South Texas and other parts of the state, and both of our teams came away with an 11th-place team finish.

Bulldog Boys (Recap)
Our varsity boys finished 11th overall and 6th out of the 4A Schools with 241 points in a very competitive field of 273 runners.

Leading the way once again was Clark Yanez, who had an outstanding performance. Clark finished 7th overall, running the 5K in 17:12.61. He put himself toward the front of the race early and competed extremely well against some really talented runners.

Isaac Vega was our second Bulldog across the line, finishing 26th overall in 18:13.78, followed by Russell Ramirez, who placed 38th overall in 18:45.49.

Cason Manning finished in 20:07.24, Chris Hernandez was right behind him in 20:07.84, Adan Carreon finished in 20:16.87, and Gabe Castillo crossed in 20:22.66. Jose Flores and Paxton Courtney also competed for us and finished in 20:36.82 and 20:44.29, respectively.

Lady Dawgs (Recap)
Our varsity girls also finished 11th overall, scoring 368 points in their Blue Division race. There were a total of 310 runners in the Varsity Blue Girls' Division.

Brekyn Langley led the Lady Dawgs with a strong performance, finishing 55th overall in 13:16.62 over the two-mile course. Ximena Zarate followed with a time of 13:30.66, and Abby Bennight was our third runner across the line in 13:44.43.

Jayde Smith gave us another solid performance at 13:56.85, while Kamila Palacios completed our top five in 14:24.00. Savannah Griffin finished in 15:34.59, and Perla Rodriguez crossed the line in 16:27.63.

I was encouraged by the girls because we continue to see signs of what this group can become. Our first four runners were separated by only about 40 seconds.

Moving Forward
Overall, I thought this was a valuable trip for our program. Traveling all the way to Corpus Christi, competing against schools we don't normally see, and putting ourselves into large and competitive races gives our athletes experience that we simply can't duplicate in practice.

There were definitely things from Saturday that we can improve on, but there were also plenty of positives. I'm proud of the effort of our Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs!
We also had a handful of Burnet alumni who attend Corpus Christi A&M: Mason Roberts, Rothermel, and Brogan Fox came out to support our runners. Ex-Burnet runners Isaias Zarate and Gustavo Vega also showed up to cheer on our Burnet Runners. We're grateful for their turnout and encouragement.
