We aren’t just building a baseball field, we are building a program that will provide the youth in this community a local competitive sports option. Brownsville Athletics stands by what they believe in; All kids deserve a chance to play at the level they are capable of playing at.
The CLRA rec center has always been a vital recreational sports program in our town. I am NOT discrediting how vital they are to our community. They are irreplaceable. However, times have changed and parents want more opportunities for their youth. The rec center has voted to remain at the recreational level and stay true to their values; all kids deserve fair equal play. And that is valuable! But there is also value, and a great need, for the next level of play. This is NOT a matter of picking sides, this is simply filing a great need for two separate programs.

I sent out a post last year shining light on this subject and 50% of the public agrees, while 50% disagrees. And that’s fine. BOTH programs will serve our community and all kids WILL get to play. The only way we do that tho is with unity. We are not starting this program to divide anything; we are starting this program to bring community unity by providing the competitive opportunities for the youth. Both programs, working together, will then build unity for CL sports. However, we can’t make the rec center agree to work with us. We can however, take the next steps forward in building what we believe to be a great asset to this community.

Some argue that my kids don’t go to school here, and that is correct. My family values believe in “I pledge allegiance to the flag….. one nation, under God,” so we chose a school that openly supports our Christian views. But that’s EXACTLY why we want our kids to have an opportunity to play sports in the community we live in. Our family has been here since 1860!! My family is fully passionate about, and deeply invested in, building the youth sports of Central Linn. We shouldn’t have to go somewhere else. That mindset, ‘this is how we do things, and if you don’t like it go somewhere else’ is EXACTLY what is causing the divide. The athletes do indeed go somewhere else, which then drastically and negatively affects Central Linn JH and HS programs.
Together, let’s be part of the solution. We want to create a culture where not only are the athletes coached and trained to excel at sports, but also learn the value of teamwork, hard work, community involvement, dedication, and a sense of pride for what we are a part of. Not just the athletes, but coaches and families as well.
We started this program with a budget of zero dollars. The community has BEYOND stepped up in so many ways to partner with us in both sponsorship and resources. Great video breaking down the mechanics of the swing. As a dad, and a coach, I believe it’s important to educate ourselves in order to aide in the development of our kids, in athletics, properly.

50% of you will agree.
And that’s ok.

I’m here today to clarify a few things.

Our program is not private. Brownsville Athletics is open to the whole community.

The rec center is a vital program; irreplaceable. All communities need a recreational league. Period.
Communities ALSO need the option for the next level of play. If you want kids to stay in the community, you must give them options. Both programs specifically serve different folks.

The divide usually happens between 3rd and 4th grade. Not junior high. Around third and fourth grade, kids are deciding which sports they enjoy recreationally, and which they excel at. Some might enjoy recreational soccer, but they want to play competitive basketball. Same with baseball. If the community can work together and provide both options, kids will stick around longer. Those athletes that want to compete have to leave the community to find other options. By the time these athletes get to junior high, they have already found their “home” team somewhere else leaving CLJH without numbers.
That’s exactly why we formed Brownsville Athletics - to give kids the option to stay here and compete in their own community. Hopefully for all sports, but starting with baseball. The longer the kids stay together the better.

The rec center voted to remain true to their recreational values and not add a competitive level. Which is fine. We have tried to work with them and our efforts are ignored. Definitely not productive, but we can’t make them like us nor agree with what we are trying to do.

Personal note, my kids go to a Christian school. A family choice based on the values we want to raise our kids by. However, they still play sports here and my tax dollars still go to support CL schools. My husband and I have still spent 1,000’s of hours pouring into the youth in THIS community because kids need more sports and less screen time. Period. Whatever we can do to get more kids outside with a ball in their hand the better.

Trying to push out or sabotage our program only drives away more youth. We can be part of the problem or part of the solution. The more support we have, the more kids we can serve in this community.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Consider us like another mom and pop cafe in town. Randy’s is irreplaceable, but Poppi’s sourdough bread is truly to die for. It’s so delicious! Both programs offer a unique aspect that adds value to our community.
