Good evening Joie Ray Nation! Our second driver featured in our MELANATED MOTORSPORTS MOMENT🏎️is Charlie Wiggins.
Charles Edwin Wiggins (15 July 1897 – 11 March 1979) was an auto racing driver and mechanic from the United States, who won the prestigious, annual, Gold and Glory Sweepstakes race four times between 1926 and 1935. As an African-American competing in the Midwest during the inter-war years, he was barred from participating in white-only events – including the Indianapolis 500 – but was a leading light in the parallel Colored Speedway Association (CSA) championships. His dominance during this period was such that the popular media dubbed him the Negro Speed King. His career was ended when he was caught up in a serious accident at the 1936 Gold and Glory event, as a consequence of which he lost his right leg and eye.🏁

Good evening Joie Ray Nation! The first driver to be profiled in our Melanated Motorsports Moment is pioneer and wheelman Lloyd Mack.
Lloyd Mack (born June 16, 1981, in Los Angeles, California), is an African-American NASCAR driver. He is the younger brother of IndyCar driver George Mack and is a two-time participant in the Drive for Diversity.
Mack began racing at the age of seven and won many championships and races over the next eight years. He then began racing late models at Irwindale Speedway in 2000, winning one race and garnering seventeen top-tens over the next two years. After running a brief Modified schedule, Mack began testing in the Indy Racing League for Sam Schmidt Motorsports. In 2005, he returned to Modified racing at Irwindale Speedway and picked up two victories. The following season, he competed in the King Taco Super Truck Division, winning two races there as well.
Mack was named to be a participant in 2007 with the Drive for Diversity program and was signed as a development driver with STAR Motorsports, but only ended up driving one race for them. He competed in the West Series and made five starts with one DNQ. His best finish was a twelfth at Altamont Motorsport Park. He made a few starts in 2008, but found little success.
Today Mack enjoys the sights and sounds of the track with his racecar driving children Jayda and Jalen Mack.
