Our horses are very special athletes. This weekend come see Jack, Barbie, Malibu, Conway and Tess perform during the Sunshine State Mounted Drill Team Assoc competition in Ocala.
FUN FACT — DRILL HORSES ARE UNIQUE!
It was recently stated while introducing a drill presentation that:
“Drill horses are often horses that have failed at dressage, failed at barrels, failed at jumping, failed at reining, etc.”
That statement could not be further from the truth.
Drill horses are not horses that “failed” at other disciplines. A successful drill horse is an exceptionally versatile, highly trained athlete with a very special temperament.
Think about what we ask of a drill horse. They must:
Work calmly and confidently in a group.
Get along with many different horses and personalities.
Travel extremely close to other horses—sometimes nearly shoulder to shoulder.
Maintain control at different rates of speed.
Accelerate and slow down as part of a team.
Make tight, precise turns, cross paths and perform intricate maneuvers while surrounded by other moving horses.
Listen to their rider even when the excitement, noise, and speed increase.
Trust both their rider and the horses around them.
Carry flags while performing at speed.
And then there are the FLAGS!
Many drill horses are also asked to carry flags—sometimes large flags that flap, snap, wave, and make noise directly above and beside them. A dependable flag horse must remain calm when the flag catches the wind, moves unexpectedly, brushes against them, or suddenly makes noise. They must continue listening to their rider while maintaining their position in the drill formation.
Now add speed, music, crowds, cheering, other horses, tight formations, and multiple flags flying around them. That requires an incredible amount of training, confidence, trust, and desensitization.
Not every talented horse can handle that environment. A horse accustomed to competing individually may be extremely accomplished in its discipline, but drill presents an entirely different challenge. That horse must learn to work as part of a team, tolerate horses
moving closely beside and around it, and remain responsive and composed while traveling at speed.
Personality matters! A drill horse needs to be willing to work with others while still having the heart, confidence, and enthusiasm to perform.
Dressage horses are talented. Barrel horses are talented. Jumpers are talented. Reining horses are talented. And drill horses deserve that same respect.
They aren't the horses that couldn't make it somewhere else.
They are the horses that CAN make it in drill.
When you see a drill horse running at speed, shoulder to shoulder, crossing paths, turning on cue, and carrying a flag through the noise and excitement, understand what you're watching:
Skill. Trust. Courage. Training.
A drill horse is NOT a failed horse.
It is a horse that has mastered something most horses cannot do.
Respect the drill horse. It has earned it.
