PERSISTENCE / RESISTANCE

Too much resistance and you’re unable to learn or practice something new because you’re just trying to survive. Too little resistance and there isn’t anything to push back against.

The middle ground – where you feel challenged, not threatened, to grow – is ideal. It builds one quality that will carry you forward and over any obstacle that life can throw in your path: persistence.

It’s been said that there is no failure for the person who gets up every time they fall, who rebounds like a rubber ball, who persists when everyone else gives up, who pushes on when everyone else turns back.

👍 PROACTIVE, NOT REACTIVE

Ever lose your temper? 😤 Do something you wish you hadn’t? Say something you wish you could take back? As Martial Artists, it is expected that we are proactive rather then reactive when it comes to difficult circumstances. 🥋

If you are living an engaged life, you will always face moments of uncertainty and challenge. The question is not whether you will be asked to face difficult moment, but rather what decisions you will make when under pressure.

💪 This is why we must all train ourselves to think, act and live proactively rather than reactively. Our best decisions are usually made when we are in a positive and proactive state of mind. Our worst decisions are usually made when we are in a negative and reactive state of mind.

🔑 3 KEYS TO A COMPLETE MARTIAL ARTS LIFE

If you want to lead a healthy martial arts lifestyle, you’ve got to develop healthy habits. And just as with the training itself, there are no shortcuts.

🏋 Your physical fitness. You can never out-train bad nutrition, poor rest/recovery habits or poor energy planning.

💭 Your emotional fitness. Are you working on managing your emotional state? Your attitude and temper need attention. Integrate this practice in your daily life - in your family, at the workplace, during your commute - by reflecting on the classroom lessons.

🤔 Your mental fitness. This is all about your focus and attention. How are you training yourself to listen better? Being mentally fit means creating the self-discipline to make hard choices you know are good for you. Mental toughness, perseverance, non-quitting spirit…these are all part of your mental fitness.

Turning the tide 🌊 with this 🔑 escape from Professor Brian Glick : in jiu-jitsu, the knee-elbow is undoubtedly the king of escapes. But slipping out to the single or double leg is a close second - and well worth your time and effort. Positionally, it brings you to a solid base and takes you out from underneath a strong pin. The opening is available any time you can establish an underhook from the bottom and can shrink your head inside the line of your partner’s cross-face.
