What might seem like a small moment to the passer by means so much to me. Being a horseman is not knowing how to ride, it's not following various equestrian influencers on their socials, and it's definitely not showing up only when it's convenient.
To you, this picture might just be a nothing moment. To me, it shows me the depth of care my student has for the horse. They finished a ride, where she thoughtfully and carefully planned the work. She walked for 15 to 20min for a warm up. She developed adjustability in the trot. She helped the mare find her balance. And she made it all feel like fun and play to the horse. Instead of pushing the work, she ended early since her horse was having a beautifully connected and attentive day. Then, instead of hurrying off to put her back in the field, she took her time, stopped several times to let her graze, petted and talked to her.
This is what it's about. Not ribbons, not the accolades of rated shows, not grinding out the next movement or level. It's the relationship.
