“I’ve known for a long time that I needed to address my health and fitness. I had gotten into the habit of saying “Monday I’ll start eating healthy and working out”. Well Monday would come and go, and nothing would change. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre diabetic, and I just didn’t like the way I looked or how weak I felt. I wanted to be able to take care of my grandbabies, to run and play with them.
I saw on Facebook that Apex was starting a weekend class in Bremen, it was close to my home and thought that might be fun, something structured and challenging. I was nervous about going, wondering what I had signed myself up for. Would it be a bunch of hardcore, super in shape people? Would I feel self-conscious? Not the case at all! Devin made me feel welcome and the class was a good mix of folks. He went over all the different exercises thoroughly and was very encouraging. If there was an exercise that I couldn’t do he would give me a modified option. It was a great beginning.
I also realized that I needed to do more and signed up for the Lifestyle training. This option taught me how to eat better and Devin worked with me to make sure I was happy with the food choices he had given me. I started to lose weight and feel better. I ran a 5K and it was amazing how good I felt running. It was still a challenge, but I could feel a difference.
September and October I tried to do it on my own and realized quickly that I still needed structure and accountability in my journey. I started working out with Devin 1 on 1 and the improvements I made were awesome. I felt stronger, slept better, and just felt better overall. My sugar was staying at 100 or below, my balance had improved as well as my stamina. Devin was always there to challenge me, he would move the bar, increase the weight, push for one more rep. He knew I could do it even if I doubted myself.
I make mistakes on my journey, but I just correct it and keep moving forward, no more “I’ll start next Monday” I just cut myself some slack correct the course and keep moving forward.
Now I’m starting to run and I’m excited about doing that and being able to run with my husband. It something he loved to do, and I never enjoyed it.
I am so happy that I took that first step, Devin is so supportive and encouraging and the people that go here are the same. Everyone cheers everybody on.
All it took was just taking a chance, stepping out of my comfort zone, and making small changes that lead to great results. I am so thankful to be here.”
