Although the Common Good isn't formally involved this year, we are pleased to pass along news that a long-standing UCF/Common Good tradition continues! The next informational meeting for the 2020 Navajo Nation Trip will be Monday, November 18, starting at 9:10 p.m. in the Arts Village, BGSU.

The two-week camping and experiential trip is planned for May 17-31, 2020, anticipated cost is $800, includes all transportation, food, lodging, events. Graduate students, international students, and community members are particularly welcome. Questions? Contact Chris Frey, [email protected].

The archives of the UCF/Common Good, recently donated to the Center for Archival Collections at BGSU, are filled with hidden gems, glimpses of stories that are mostly forgotten today in BG. Over the years, lots of people have fought for a better world. This flyer and BG News story feature Ground Zero Week, a national movement to protest militarism and nuclear war, whose local face was provided by the BG Peace Coalition/UCF. Ground Zero Week was held April 18-25, 1982.

As the story shows, it was hard sometimes to get people to care.

This morning, we donated twelve boxes, representing 75 years of history, to Michelle Sweetser and Nick Pavlik of the Center for Archival Collections at BGSU. The boxes of documents, including photos, financial accounts, newspapers, pamphlets, architectural drawings, newspaper clippings, flyers and other memorabilia trace the history of United Christian Fellowship (1946-2010) and the Common Good (2010-2019) in Bowling Green

It was a bittersweet moment, a passage into a different place for this organization. The UCF/CG was long a focal point for BG students committed to social justice and a better world. In the ‘80s, under the leadership of Bill & Karen Thompson, the UCF pioneered student immersion trips to the Navajo Nation and the South Bronx, and taught countless students the value of peace, dialogue, and meditation . Punk rock and indie rock shows were held in the UCF basement. People came together. Communities were created. Hearts opened.

The Common Good will soon be back, in different form, to build on the work of all those generations who came before. Stay tuned.
