**Pekiti Tirsia Kali Seminar**

**Edged Weapons • Close-Quarters Combat • Real Self-Defense**

**Instructed by Tuhon Tim Waid**

Pekiti Tirsia Kali is a combat-first Filipino martial art from the Tortal family of the Visayas. The name means to close in and quarter the opponent—ending the fight at close range with blades, impact weapons, and empty hands. It is not a sport system. It was built for survival against one or many attackers, and its methods have been adopted by elite military and law enforcement units, including programs developed for the Philippine Marine Corps.

Tuhon Tim Waid is one of the foremost authorities on authentic Pekiti Tirsia Kali. A student of Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje since 1988, he lived and trained with GT privately in the Philippines for years and is certified in the original systems of Doce Methodos, Contradas, and Contra-Tirsia. He developed the official close-quarters combat program later adopted by the Philippine Marine Corps, served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry platoon sergeant, and trains military, police, and civilian defenders worldwide.

**Why this matters for self-defense**

🔥 You learn how edged-weapon violence actually works—not movie fights or sport drills.
🔥 Skills transfer: knife, stick, empty hands, and everyday objects (pen, flashlight, keys) follow the same principles.
🔥 You train offense as defense: move off the line, take the angle, and stop the threat instead of waiting to block.
🔥 Footwork, timing, and close-range control give smaller defenders a real equalizer against size and strength.
🔥 You build the awareness and decisive action needed when distance disappears and there is no referee.

This is rare, high-level instruction in a proven blade-based survival art. Come ready to work. Leave with skills that travel from the training floor to the street.

**All levels welcome. Bring training blades/sticks if you have them; loaners typically available.**

🔥Reserve your spot now—spaces for a seminar of this caliber fill fast.🔥

I've been tagged or sent this incident by numerous people. It's an unfortunate event.

Many people go straight to "why didn't they use non-lethal force or why not shoot her in the leg, arm etc"

Facts are she had already killed a woman just prior to this incident and severely injured another. Her intent was not questionable. Had she reached one of the officers they would have most likely been severely injured or killed.

I do not intend to insult, but even with what appears as her limited physical athleticism, at that range she could have done serious damage had lethal force not been applied. She was already tased multiple times with little effect to impede her attack.

Yes, there are tactics we as edged weapons practitioners use in training for an altercation like this but that does not mean you skip the use of fi****ms if that is the easiest, quickest and safest result to eliminating a threat. Anything other than what was done would have put the lives of the responding officers in more danger than already was.

I've seen comments:

"kick the knife out her hand"

No. training for a life threatening attack does not resort to kicking the weapon. Most are trained to shoot center mass until the threat is neutralized. Shooting legs, arms leaves no guarantee the threat will stop. Center mass more than not, will.

"why didn't they taze her?" -

They did. Multiple times. It does not always work.

It is true, majority of law enforcement training is inadequate. Most departments hand to hand training ends after the academy. Further training is usually on their own dime.

With that being said, i would not be surprised if these officers are let off without incident. I suspect they did as trained. Verbal, non-lethal then lethal. She had already committed a murder!

We have several officers who train at our academy. (Cyclone BJJ and Combatives) I know of two who personally used hand to hand tactics they learned from us on multiple occasions to eliminate a possible threat. Proper training can save the officer and the attackers life, but it's not always the case. Lethal force sometimes must be applied for the safety of the majority.

***5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER EDGED WEAPONS***

"I own a firearm. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight!"

Do you train with your firearm beyond a static range? Firing rounds down the range can be therapeutic and is an excellent starting point for anyone learning to shoot. But if your training stops there, you are leaving so much on the table in terms of firearm handling. Static range shooting will not prepare you for a high stress situation requiring the skills needed to be on target when the time it is needed most. Almost every edged weapon practitioner's initial weapon is a firearm. Blades do not replace a firearm, they compliment them and make you a more complete adversary.

1. Proper Edged weapon training WILL IMPROVE your fi****ms training. Bodily self awareness, footwork and judgment skills needed to master edged weapons training directly translates to improving your shooting. Can you learn and be a proficient shooter without it? sure, but these skills will get you there faster.

2. A blade as a secondary weapon is common sense. There's no ammo to run out of, It is more readily concealable and affordable options are abundant.

3. Close quarters - At hand to hand range, a blade can be deployed as quick or quicker than a firearm AND less chance of an attacker being able to grab it before being injured. Create distance with a blade to safely pull your firearm. You do not want to pull a firearm within reach of your attacker if possible.

4. Though laws vary state to state, a blade is often less restrictive compared to a firearm when it comes to carrying. Often times a firearm is forbidden in locations that a blade may not be.

5. There's multiple uses for a blade beyond the initial self defense encounter. It can be a literal survival tool for many situations beyond a physical altercation. It is an all purpose tool everyone should have. How many times have you heard, "anyone have a knife? or scissors?"

Peaked interest in learning the blade? We can help! In person and some online training available
