Since 1968, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School —- known to most simply as BOSS — has delivered life-changing, wilderness-based experiences to adventurous people all over the world. "Know more, carry less" is one of our core philosophies and at BOSS, students are taught how indigenous cultures around the world could often survive and even thrive without all the modern equipment people today feel i

s necessary. As a result of their time on the trail with us, people gain competency in the wilderness and confidence in themselves.

BOSS instructors, Perry Tancredi and Hannes Wingate, survived Outside Days in Denver.

Our feet? Questionable.
Our voices? A little hoarse.
Our enthusiasm for festivals? Through the roof.

Apparently, spending a weekend surrounded by awesome people and great conversations has convinced us that one festival is not enough.

So here's our shameless request:
Got a festival, fair, expo, conference, community event, or gathering coming up? Tell us about it! We'd love to explore presenting, exhibiting, or partnering.

Drop your event below and let us know how we can collaborate. Bonus points if there's good duff.

Where should BOSS go next?

The 2026 season begins this weekend.

More miles.
More challenge.
More clarity.

Step away from the noise.
Step into the wilderness.

Looking back at these retro photos of a few staff members, we can’t help but laugh a little — and remember just how important it is to get outside as a kid. The curiosity, confidence, and connection built in the outdoors stay with us for life.

At BOSS, we focus on adult wilderness education, but we’re all still kids at heart. That same sense of adventure continues to guide us into the backcountry, where every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, have some "Type II" fun, and put our skills to the test.

Please join us in welcoming our newest apprentice, Phoebe Martel (center), and welcoming back Peter Bauer (left) and Luce Luna (right) for the season ahead.

We officially kicked off the season this week with staff training, and apprentice training began today in the backcountry under the leadership of Jeff Sanders and Matt Furches. (Pre-departure photo pictured).

We’re excited to have such a strong apprentice team in place and look forward to the 2026 season.

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives in service to others. At BOSS, we’re reminded that resilience is built through humility, responsibility, and community — values strengthened in both wild places and everyday life. Today we honor the sacrifice of those who served and reflect on the legacy they leave behind.

When we receive a package from Jeremy Thomas, BOSS Master Instructor and knife maker, we can't help but get excited.

Minimalist. Razor sharp. Makes you immediately want to carve a spoon and question modern society.

Want to know what separates a dependable field knife from the rest? Check out Jeremy’s video on the BOSS YouTube channel as he breaks down the essential features of a quality bushcraft knife — from material to practical performance in the wilderness.

Have you wondered how to train for backpacking at high elevation on a BOSS expedition?

The short answer:
- Hike with a 35-40lb pack

- Don't skip leg day

The long answer:
Comment "leg day," and we'll send you our Training for BOSS FAQ.

Most people spend their lives getting more comfortable.
A few decide to test themselves again.

The 50+ 14-Day Expedition at the Boulder Outdoor Survival School is designed for adults ready to step away from routine and learn real wilderness survival skills in the backcountry.

For 14 days, participants travel through remote terrain learning:
- Priorities of Survival
- Fire-making
- Shelter construction
- Navigation
- Water procurement

No previous experience is required — just a willingness to learn, adapt, and challenge yourself. Many students tell us they’ve wanted to do something like this for years. Applications are now open. Space is limited.

Join BOSS on Sunday, May 31, from 1:45–2:25 PM at the Outside Days Festival in Colorado!

In our Survival Skills Workshop: Belonging with the Land, instructors Perry Tancredi and Ryan Ross will present a different approach to wilderness living rooted in the Positive Impact philosophy of the Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS). Through stories and practical examples, participants will learn how intentional interaction with the natural world can restore and nourish the places we visit.

Learn more at the link in our bio. If you’ll be there, swing by the presentation to say hello.

We’re especially excited to spend a day outside talking about getting outside. Honestly, it would’ve been weird to host this one indoors. Thank you to the OutsideDays folks for including BOSS in your lineup!
