🚨 Former Red Sox first-round pick Braden Montgomery made baseball history last night. 🔥⚾

In his MLB debut, the 23-year-old crushed a two-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give the White Sox a dramatic 6-5 victory over the Braves.

Montgomery was selected by the Red Sox with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft before being traded to Chicago as part of the blockbuster deal that brought Garrett Crochet to Boston.

No matter how you feel about the trade, it's hard not to be happy for a young player living out his dream on baseball's biggest stage.

First MLB game. First MLB hit. Walk-off home run.

Final from Tropicana Field 🏟

The Red Sox showed some fight late, but the result is the same.

Boston falls 4-3 to the Rays and drops another series, sinking to a season-low 11 games under .500.

Jarren Duran put the Sox on the board early, Marcelo Mayer delivered a clutch two-run double in the 8th, and the comeback bid had the tying run 90 feet away. But once again, the offense couldn't find that one big hit when it mattered most.

Tomorrow is now about avoiding the sweep.

Just when it looked like Nick Martinez was going to cruise through another dominant outing, the Red Sox finally broke through in the 8th inning.

Marcelo Mayer came up clutch with a two-run double, cutting the Rays' lead to 4-3 and giving Boston some much-needed life after being held in check for seven innings.

The Red Sox aren't done yet. 👀🔥⚾

Not his sharpest outing of the season, as the rookie allowed a season-high four runs and gave up plenty of contact. Still, he battled through six innings and kept Boston in the game.

After recording the final out of the sixth, a visibly frustrated Tolle threw his glove down near the dugout tunnel — a sign of the high standards he holds himself to.

Sometimes frustration comes from caring.

Tonight was one of those nights.

Payton Tolle's night unraveled in the 4th inning. 😤

After getting two outs, the Rays strung together three straight RBI hits, turning a 1-0 Red Sox lead into a 3-1 deficit.

Tolle battled through 3.2 innings, but Tampa Bay made him pay late in the frame when it looked like he might escape the inning.

Rays lead 3-1.

The Red Sox tried just about everything possible to hand the Rays a run in the 1st inning... and somehow escaped unscathed. 😤

🔺 No challenge on a called strike three
🔺 Passed ball
🔺 Plenty of chaos

Yet Boston still got out of the inning without allowing a run.

🚨 Imagine this lineup with a healthy Triston Casas in the middle of it.

It’s hard not to wonder how different this season might look if Casas had stayed healthy.

The Red Sox currently rank last in MLB in home runs, and the designated hitter position has been a major black hole offensively. Boston's DHs have combined for just 4 home runs, a .635 OPS, and a 76 wRC+ this season.

Meanwhile, Casas owns a career .800 OPS and 119 wRC+. In fact, Willson Contreras is the only Red Sox player this year with a better OPS and wRC+ than Casas’ career numbers.

No one player fixes every problem, but when your team is desperate for power and run production, losing one of your best hitters is impossible to ignore.

The Red Sox have activated Garrett Whitlock from the 15-Day IL and optioned Anthony Seigler back to Triple-A Worcester.

Whitlock returns to a Boston bullpen that could certainly use a boost, bringing experience, versatility, and another reliable arm as the Red Sox look to get back on track.

Back at Tropicana Field. Time to bounce back. ⚾️🧦

The Red Sox return to Tampa Bay for Game 2 of this three-game series and will send Payton Tolle (3-2, 2.28 ERA) to the mound against Nick Martinez (5-2, 2.29 ERA) and the Rays.

Boston will look to snap its two-game losing streak, while hoping the offense finally wakes up and gives Tolle the run support he's earned all season.
