Symbiosis or Benevolence?
The highly sensitive skin of a horse can detect the tiniest fly landing on a single hair (and will twitch instantly to cast the interloper off), yet cowbirds will land on their rumps and it’s as if nothing happened.
Cow birds get their name from their proclivity to hang around herd animals and eat the insects stirred up by the animals’ hooves.
Do the horses somehow perceive the possible benefit of having these avian pest predators hanging around?
What do you think?
