5 Do's and Dont's as a card show buyer:

1. DO: Make offers on cards. If a vendor's price is higher than what you want to pay, make an offer. Vendors are there to sell. Some are more rigid than others but they all want to make money. Just be respectful.

1. DON'T: Don't be afraid to look up comps at the table. You may feel uncomfortable price checking what the vendor's asking price is for a card right in front of them. Get past that. Most vendors are open to seeing recent comps for a card and negotiating a fair price with you.

2. DO: Be aware of WHEN comps were. A comp from the middle of an athlete's season is different than a comp in the middle of the offseason. Comps can vary widely during the season based on the athlete's performance.

2. DON'T: Don't be afraid to look around at different tables for the best price. Unless the card you are looking to buy is a case hit or a SSP (Super Short Print), there is likely another table with the same or similar card. We all work hard for our money and want to spend the least amount we can for what we want.

3. DO: If you're going to bring something to a vendor table to sell, come with a price-a reasonable price. Most vendors are happy to look at what you want to sell them but they can't buy AND sell your card(s) for you. And remember that, most likely, they are looking to buy your cards so they can re-sell them at their table. So, expecting to get 100% of what eBay sales are is not reasonable unless what you have is in very high demand.

3. DON'T: Don't feign being insulted by a vendor's offer if you didn't offer one to begin with. Telling a vendor you don't know how much you want for your cards and then balking at an actual price with no counter offer for the vendor is a waste of both of your time.

4. DO: Pay attention to what the vendor's focus is for their table. If they have a ton of graded cards, don't assume any raw cards they are selling to be in pristine condition. That's not to say the vendor is trying to be sneaky or deceptive. They may be selling raw cards because they don't see the value of grading them even if they will return with a perfect grade. However, there are some that sell cards raw simply because they know the cards have imperfections. It's your responsibility to carefully scrutinize the condition before buying from a card show vendor.

4. DON'T: Don't EVER assume sales. If you get a great price for a card you're buying, don't overextend yourself with the assumption you'll be able to flip that card quickly. Previous recent sales can indicate how desirable a card is to the public. However, if you can't afford to hold a card beyond a couple of weeks, don't create an unnecessary stress by buying it.

5. DO: Bring your children to the card shows. Give them a budget. Teach them to negotiate respectfully. Spend that quality time with your kids while letting them learn valuable life lessons. Vendors remember what it was like to be a kid. We all want it to be a great experience for the next generation.

5. DON'T: Don't weaponize your kids. There's a huge difference in spending time with your children and sharing a hobby that you enjoy versus using your kids to manipulate vendors to accepting low ball offers that will benefit you. Don't be that parent.
