State Tournament Loss Ends Careers Of Four

The Bearcat baseball season ended last Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the Class 3A state tournament.

It was tournament host Ashdown who ended the Bearcat year at 18-7 with a 15-12 win, though doing so after the Bearcats had scored five times in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate.

The final out also ended the careers of four players: Ty Goff, Ethan Wooldridge, Chance Broussard, and Jacob Herrera.
We’ll start with the later one.

Herrera pitched and played third base this season. The staff ace, Herrera logged 55 and 2/3 innings during an 8-2 season. He also hit .412 for the year.

What those numbers don’t reveal is how dominant Herrera was when it mattered the most, in the postseason.

Herrera made four postseason starts and won them all. Over the 22 innings he allowed just two runs, only one of which was earned, for an ERA of 0.32. He struck out 27 in those four outings and finished with 71 on the season.

Herrera’s 2.64 ERA is tops among pitchers with at least 7 innings of work.

At the plate Herrera was a .400 hitter in the postseason tournaments but that doesn’t tell the whole story either.

Herrera had driven in 23 runs going into the district tournament. That was good enough for third in a tight race. When the season ended Friday Herrera had driven in 41, giving him the most on the club, by a margin of eight.

Broussard was behind the plate this season. He put the gear aside to make a couple of appearances on the mound but starting March 12, he was the only catcher the Bearcats employed, and for the season he caught 145 1/3 innings, out of 152.

When he was at the plate with a bat rather than a glove, Broussard was a force. He had at least one hit in 23 of the 25 games and finished the year leading the Bearcats with a .483 average. He also drove in the second most runs with 33.

Like Herrera, that is not a full picture of what Broussard did. He co-led the team in home runs with two, including one in the postseason; co-led the team in triples, also with two; and led the team in doubles with 12. Throw in 27 singles and the 65 total bases was easily the team leader, as was the resulting .730 slugging percentage out of the second spot in the order.

Wooldridge spent the first part of pregame warmups fielding simulated less than perfect throws from infielder teammates. How many errors he saved cannot be known, but as for himself, Wooldridge committed one, easily making him the fielding percentage leader.

Also unafraid to take a base, Wooldridge was hit by a pitch 11 times, the second most on the club, and he drew 13 walks. Wooldridge drove in 16 runs.

Working through rehabilitating a knee injury, Goff wasn’t expected to see any action but he actually got into three games, pitching a scoreless inning in each.

Two of the games were lopsided in the Bearcats’ favor and Goff entered the other with the Bearcats down by eight against Ashdown, kept the Panthers from scoring, and watched from the bench as his teammates made a bid to complete a comeback.

Goff is the only Bearcat to not allow a run making is 0.00 ERA the overall lowest.

Third Meeting Goes To Bearcats

The Booneville Bearcats lost at Lamar in early March.

The Bearcats lost to Lamar in Booneville in early April.

Among those desperately seeking a third encounter with the Warriors after the later was assistant coach Jake Fennell.

Fennell, head coach Arron Kimes and the Bearcats (18-6) got it and they would not lose to Lamar (26-10) today in the opening round of the Class 3A state tournament in Ashdown as Jacob Herrera spun a 4-hit shutout and Dax Goff and Randon Ray hit solo home runs in a 6-0 Bearcat win.'

How dominant was Herrera (8-2)? Lamar did not have a runner get past second base. Only twice did the Warriors have two men aboard. Needing just 85 pitches Herrera also struck out eight while running his scoreless streak to 18 innings and his win streak to five.

After the Warriors turned a double play to erase a Chance Broussard single in the first inning Goff led off the second sending the first pitch he saw from Jacob Key over the fence in left and it was 1-0.

Randon Ray, Peyton Tatum, and Ethan Wooldridge returned the double play with a 6-4-3 to erase a Waydon Copeland single in the Lamar second.

With one down in the Bearcat third Randon Ray hit a 2-0 pitch from Key out of the Ashdown City Park, also to left, and it was 2-0.

After Tatum walked with one away in the fourth, Dunn Daniel singled and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. With Wooldridge at the plate Tatum scored on a wild pitch and, with two strikes, Wooldridge bunted up the third base line and Dunn was safe at home on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-0.

A walk to Broussard preceded an error on a ball hit by Jacob Herrera in the Bearcat fifth and, with one down, Rylen Ray drew a walk, during which Broussard scored on a passed ball.

Nate Freeman relieved Key and promptly walked Tatum before Daniel lifted a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Freeman hit Wooldridge with a pitch before escaping further damage.

Herrera surrendered singles in both the fifth and sixth innings, but nothing more. He allowed a second single to Justin Dillard and walked Landon Harrison in the seventh before getting a strikeout looking to end the game – five of Herrera’s strikeouts were on called third strikes with two ending innings.

The Bearcats move on to face tournament host Ashdown, a 4-3 winner over Pangburn today, in the quarterfinal round of the tournament at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Herrera, Bearcats On Way To State Tournament

Jacob Herrera picked up two wins in the Class 3A Region 1 tournament last Thursday through Saturday. He also hit a home run, drove in 12 runs, and scored eight times as the Bearcats earned their way into the Class 3A state tournament.

The Bearcats (17-6) won the regional opener 27-2 over Lincoln at Harrison Parks and Recreation on Thursday, lost to Danville 13-10 on Friday, then beat West Fork 12-0 in the third place game on Saturday.

As the 3-seed coming out of Region 1 the Bearcats were scheduled to play at 5:30 p.m. in the Class 3A state tournament on Thursday in Ashdown. However, administrators were able to get the game switched with a 12:30 game – the same time the Lady Cat softball team plays – which should allow the team’s four seniors to make the trek back to the school campus for commencement exercises at Bearcat Stadium.

Bearcats 27 Lincoln 2

Chance Broussard got the Bearcats started with a two-run home run one pitch after Randon Ray singled off the Lincoln pitcher’s leg.
Dax Goff followed with a double and later scored for a 3-0 lead.

It was 5-0 after two innings and 15-0 after the top of the third as Randon Ray had been to the plate four times before the Lincoln ninth place hitter had seen his first pitch from Jacob Herrera.

Jacob Herrera worked just three innings and, having thrown just 48 pitches, would be eligible to pitch again on Saturday.

Peyton Tatum made his 10th appearance, throwing the fourth inning, and Ty Goff took the mound for the second time, allowing no runs in the fifth.

For the day Randon Ray, Broussard, Jacob Herrera and Brooks Herrera all had three hits in the 16 hit attack. Randon Ray drove in three, as did Jacob Herrera.

Danville 13 Bearcats 10

The Bearcats opened a 5-0 lead by the middle of the second inning before Danville cut it to 5-4 in the bottom of the second against Dax Goff (3-2).

It was 7-4 going to the bottom of the fifth when Danville used four walks, three errors, and one hit to score nine times against Goff, Randon Ray, and Brooks Herrera.

Brooks Herrera doubled and Randon Ray walked with one down in the top of the sixth, and Jacob Herrera drilled a three-run home run to make it 13-10 and give Herrera a five RBI day.

Dunn Danniel walked and Ethan Wooldridge was hit by a pitch with two down in the seventh to get the tying run to the plate but Gabe Stanley induced a ground ball to end it.

For the day Jacob Herrera had the only multi-hit game for the Bearcats, with two, and Peyton Tatum was only other Bearcat with multiple RBIs, also with two.

Bearcats 12 West Fork 0

The visiting team for the third straight day, the Bearcats again scored first, putting three runs on the board in the first, the first two coming on a sacrifice bunt turned error.

It would be all the support Jacob Herrera (7-2) would need as he allowed only three hits in a shutout.

Another Tiger error and a ground out by Brooks Herrera led to three more Bearcat runs in the second for a 6-0 lead.

With two down in the fifth the Bearcats got singles from Chance Broussard, Jacob Herrera, and Dax Goff, then a walk from Rylen Ray and another single from Peyton Tatum to make it 12-0.

Jacob Herrera set the Tigers down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game in five innings.

Tatum had a three hit day and Broussard also had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Bearcats.

Girls

The Lady Cats also punched their ticket to the Class 3A state softball tournament over the weekend with a pair of wins over Elkins and Hackett.

The Lady Cats were the regional runner-up, falling to Paris in an extra inning game on Saturday. The Lady Cats had won three previous meetings with the Lady Eagles.
