The world feels scary right now.
The news is heavy.
The economy feels shaky.

There’s a low-grade hum of uncertainty underneath everything.

And when things feel like this, the instinct is to shrink.

To wait.
To postpone.
To tell yourself, “I’ll focus on my art when things calm down.”

But here’s what I believe:

We don’t need art less in times like this.
We need it more.

We need voices that are honest.
We need songs that metabolize fear.
We need beauty.
We need meaning.
We need artists who are willing to stay awake and make something anyway.

You do not need perfect conditions to become the artist you are.

It’s not flashy.
It’s not overnight.
It’s not “big breakthrough and now everything is perfect.”
It’s daily songwriting in GarageBand.
It’s paperwork and leases.
It’s learning how to sing the songs you once thought weren’t for you.
It’s stabilizing a mix voice.
It’s building a practice that honors your brain.
It’s opening a studio.
It’s booking a tour.
It’s standing in a 1,200-seat hall and also showing up to an open mic.
It’s artists rearranging their lives — gently, bravely — around what matters.
This is the kind of growth I care about.
Sustainable. Integrated. Whole-human.

Learning something new, whether it’s a vocal skill, a song, or your next creative chapter, will eventually lead to a particular kind of ache that shows up somewhere between inspiration and a finished product.

This pain point on the learning and growth journey has been called a lot of things: The Pit, The Valley of Despair, The Wilderness, The Messy Middle, The Ordeal, The Abyss. Clearly, it’s far from paradise.
