Electrical connections are critical to a well-functioning pinball machine. Many of the problems I encounter, especially on older games, are related to connections. I often come across the pictured IDC type of connector installed on games, and they are frequently the source of problems.

Typically those of us that work on a lot of games exclusively use a crimp style of connector similar to what was used in the factory vs. these Insulation Displacement Contacts. The benefit is a much longer lasting solution that you won't be fixing again six months later. Crimp contacts take a bit more practice and skill to use, but they can last for decades!

I once had a client call me and say that they had tried working on their game, replaced a blown fuse, started the game, and a diode blew up and pieces of it him them in the face. Thats when they called me to help. Turns out they had put the wrong size fuse in their game, and it caused quite a bit of damage.

One of the scarier problems I encounter fixing games is when someone uses the wrong rating of fuse. Those unfamiliar with fixing games can think there probably isn't much difference between a 15 and 20 amp fuse. That is true, until there is a problem like a short, and then that five amp discrepancy can be the difference between a blown fuse and damaged components, or even a fire. See the hole in the circuit board pictured as an example of what can happen when things go wrong.

When in doubt, save your forehead from flying diode parts and call someone to help!
