In workplace conversations, listening needs room.

Ask one question, then listen. If you ask five questions in a row, it can feel like an interrogation, even when you’re trying to help.

What helps you pause before asking your next question?

You’re writing a work email and hesitating over the request.
“I need your decision on the timeline by Thursday” can be both respectful and clear. You don’t have to make the request smaller to make it kind.
What request have you been finding difficult to say clearly?

Ouch. But also true.

When it comes to a hard conversation that you’re dreading, avoidance is a killer

We tell ourselves we're "protecting the relationship." "Waiting for the right moment." "Not wanting to make things worse."

Meanwhile, the issue grows. Trust erodes. Resentment builds. And the person we're "protecting" has no idea anything is wrong.

Avoiding saying the thing kills teams, relationships, and engagement.

You do not need a better script. You need to notice sooner.

Notice when your body tightens before a name pops up on your calendar.

Notice when you soften a message because you are afraid of the reaction, not because softness serves the outcome of the conversation.

Notice when you nod along in a meeting while your gut is quietly screaming.

Awareness is the first skill. Listening is the second. Word choice is the third.

Together, they change how people experience you before you ever open your mouth.

And together, your communication will naturally become clearer. Your team will feel it.

Supporting local businesswomen means creating a community where women can learn, grow, and succeed together.

It’s about mentorship, leadership, guidance, and having people around you who understand the challenges of building something of your own.

That’s what we do here at Whatcom Women in Business. We support one another, learn together, and grow together, both as individuals and as a community.

When women support women in business, the whole community becomes stronger.

This question changed how I think about conflict.

How is the difficulty coming from “them” if we haven’t even started the conversation yet?

I’ve found, in my 20 years of employee relations work, that we label people long before we begin any conversation with them: "He's defensive." "She always gets her back up." "They can't handle feedback." We make these assumptions, and then brace ourselves accordingly.

But if the words haven't left your mouth yet… where is the difficulty actually coming from?

The common denominator in any "difficult" conversation that you have is … you.
Barbara's framework flips the script.

Most communication problems do not start with the words.

They start before the words.

In the assumption you carried into the room. In the state you were in when the email hit your inbox. In the story you told yourself about what the words meant before you asked.

Words are only part of the message. State, timing, what you actually hear and what the speaker actually meant do the rest.

This is why scripts alone do not fix hard conversations. If the pattern underneath is off, no script will fix that.

Be aware and notice sooner. Choose your response. Be present and watch how quickly the room changes.
