Golden School of Tai Chi Ch'uan Exploring the spirit and applications of Tai Chi as a martial art, healing art and Way of the Tao This involves developing greater control of the body and mind.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan is an internal style martial art whose goals are developing greater peace and harmony while strengthening and balancing the internal energy or chi of the body. The benefits of this discipline are to increase awareness, health and longevity. As a martial art T'ai Chi is unique in that it promotes non contention. One does not attempt to beat an opponent but blend with his force in a

way that it becomes irrelevant. In application it springs from deep inner calm and awareness. To have the ability to only be at peace in harmonious circumstances is relatively without challenge, it is only when faced with strife, chaos or threat, that being at peace becomes a great asset.

In the Taoist art of T'ai Chi Ch'uan we discover that there are only two forces in the universe, yin and yang. On the grand scale they are observed as resonance and dissonance, which act as the brakes and gas pedals of creation, where one attracts and the other repels.
They may also be seen as light and dark as illustrated in the T'ai Chi Tu or Yin Yang symbol. You may also realize that in this life there are those moving towards the light and those moving away from it. There is nothing any of us can do about that but we can pick which one we choose to head towards and we can ignore all that is not taking us in that direction.
It is all simply energy, positive and negative, yin and yang. You cannot eliminate one of those energies as they both need to exist for balance, evolution and to create the whole, but you can pick which one you align with. Darkness picks what it can move along with or against. In humankind they are the emotions of pain, fear and anger but it cannot move against the light because the light dispels darkness. The light is embodied only by one emotion and that emotion is love. Please choose wisely, the emotions you invest in.

Movement in T'ai Chi Ch'uan is based upon the cosmic energy of the universe. This embodies five essential things, energy, structure, gravity, inertia and timing. Just think about it, the cosmic energy of the universe is astounding, it can generate galaxies as effortlessly as popping popcorn. Imagine what that can do if we incorporate universal energy into our own movements? Let me give you this example, if you throw a ball in the air, energy moves the structure up and inertia and gravity work to create the perfect timing of the ball dropping. It generates a parabolic movement and the shape created by its rise and fall are the exact geometry visible throughout universe as well. This is why we see shapes such as the Fibonacci sequence over and over again, as they take the least effort and energy to generate themselves.
Unfortunately, humans have gotten far away from their natural movement over time, by over reliance on our brains telling us how to do stuff. Way back some sixty thousand years ago and before, we still allowed ourselves to be moved by universal energy and all was well and good. For example, throw a ball into the air, it goes up and comes down perfectly in synch with everything. Now imagine we create a ball, but it's like our bodies now, moving like a drone with a little motor to move it. The elements no longer determine it's trajectory and timing, as it goes up and down when we want it to, however it is no longer moving in synch with nature and eventually the motor wears out or needs to be replaced. Are you starting to see the similarities to us?

Our motors are our muscles, which contract on demand and generate all our movement. However the thing that wears out is our bodies and they are not so easily replaced. When we allow the rhythms of the universe to move us, our bodies will last much, much longer before wearing out. In T'ai chi Ch'uan we do not use muscular contraction or use muscles in general, we learn to sense and move with the whole body and the action of gravity pressing us down on the earth and follow the timing of its' natural spring up, just like the natural flow seen in waves breaking upon the shore. In physics it is observed that everything is either a particle or a wave, in T'ai Chi, we move like waves whereas non-T'ai Chi people move much more like particles. So rather than accessing energy from contracting our muscles in T'ai Chi Ch'uan, we access our energy from the gentle and natural stretching and responsive contraction of our fascia, ligaments, tendons and sinew. In the Taoist belief structure, which T'ai Chi Ch'uan is based upon, contraction is seen as the energy of dying, while expansion embraces the energy of life. Keep in mind that muscles squeeze Chi (the body's life energy) out of them with every contraction, while energy expanding through the fascia becomes filled with Chi. Hopefully this offers some perspective and insight and is why the Taoists say, "Stillnes in stillness is not the true stillness, that only through stillness in motion does the universal energy manifest.

"Western Washington University's, Gene Golden hopes to spread the word on the value of T'ai Chi Ch'uan"
By Ryan Myrvold

Having moved from New York, Maine, Florida, California and finally to Bellingham, Gene Golden found his place, having started The Golden School of T'ai Chi Ch'uan and as instructor of physical education at Western, where he teaches Tai Chi Ch’uan. Tai Chi is a martial art focused on meditative movements and Golden said the self-defense aspect focuses on redirecting and controlling the energy and momentum of others.
Golden said one of the biggest misperceptions about Tai Chi is that it is simply a group of people moving and meditating outside, as opposed to a valuable martial art capable of saving lives.
“Students don't know that it's a martial art and think it's just a calming exercise. But why would you not want to know the coolest stuff about the system that is designed to protect you in extreme, unimaginable circumstances?” Golden said.
While self-defense is a valuable aspect of Tai Chi, Golden said he finds Tai Chi integrates very well with his and his students’ personal lives, as the mindset and meditative practices connect to other facets of their lives. Golden said he sees Tai Chi as a force that unites his interests, and that he hopes his students will see it that way as well.
“If you spread it out like spokes on a wheel, Tai Chi gets more interesting as it supports and makes a connection of all those interests," Golden said.
Golden began practicing Tai Chi Ch’uan in 1975, and started teaching in 1980 after learning the system from Grand Master William C.C Chen, who Golden simply refers to as William — a level of relaxed informality Golden keeps with his students.

"My students are able to apply Tai Chi to apply Tai Chi to something meaningful in their lives. That’s the way Tai Chi is. You can take it in whatever direction you want."
Gene Golden
“My students are able to apply Tai Chi to something meaningful in their lives,” Golden said. “That’s the way Tai Chi is. You can take it in whatever direction you want.”
Even though Tai Chi is a serious art that requires discipline and focus to learn and master, Golden said it is supposed to be fun, first and foremost.
“William Chen was hysterically funny, and I realized that if people teaching Tai Chi aren’t funny then they don’t understand the art,” Golden said. “William would crack everybody up all the time.”
As more awareness happens around Tai Chi, Golden said he hopes more people will take his classes and understand how Tai Chi can bolster their lives.
“When they first walk into the class, they don’t understand anything about Tai Chi. They have some feeling they’ll be more peaceful or healthier. So, it’s my job to fill in all else that it could be,” he said.

Please join Us for World Tai Chi Day in Bellingham.
The World Tai Chi Day Celebration is soon coming up on Saturday, April 29th and we will be celebrating it that day at the Majestic Ballroom at 1027 N. Forest St., from 10 am until noon, including Tai Chi Demonstrations by all of the schools who will be attending.
It is a global event where participants from over eighty countries will be participating.
Bill Douglas, the founder of this event believed that the consciousness of so many individuals synched in harmony in the meditative movements of Tai Chi Chuan would influence humanity as a whole to bring them into a state of centered being, thereby uplifting the vibratory frequency of the planet and helping to create a powerful presence of peace throughout the globe.
It is indeed a beautiful concept and we in Bellingham are joining in this effort along with the participation of Tai Chi schools and practitioners from as far as Vancouver, BC and Seattle. In recognition of this day, Governor Jay Inslee, in his wisdom and beneficence, is proclaiming it to be World Tai Chi Day in the State of Washington.
The public is invited, so that they too can experience what Tai Chi is all about.
The event will be hosted by Gene Golden, the owner of the Golden School of Tai Chi Chuan. To learn more about Tai Chi in Bellingham, be sure to check my website at www.goldenstaichi.com

Our bodies have an amazing capability, for they are directly connected to Source knowledge and awareness via our heart chakra. When this chakra is completely open it establishes this connection. Our minds, on the other hand, are only connected to our bodies.

To Bee or Not to Be?

I had quite an illuminating occurrence just the other day. It began with my search for local honey, where I was directed to a ninety-year-old beekeeper named Marlyn, who raised his own bees, here in Bellingham. He seemed astoundingly spry and energized and appeared to be at least 30 years younger than his actual age. He reminded me of William Chen, my T'ai Chi Master, who also happens to be exactly ninety years old, although you would guess him to be no older than in his fifties. Marlyn attributed his state of wellbeing to the daily consumption of honey from his hives. More interestingly, he began to tell me of his bees, and it seemed he had learned quite a bit of philosophy from his bees and their lifestyle. How they looked out for one another and how united they were as a hive.
This instantly reminded me of another story I had just come across. It happens that a local beekeeper's daughter found that three of the bees in her dad's hive had become mired in a puddle of honey. Feeling sorry for them, she extracted the bees from the honey and placed them on a jar lid in hopes they might survive. Her dad told her that her efforts were useless, as they were doomed. However, when she returned later, she found that they had been surrounded by their sisters who were meticulously cleaning the honey off of them. Later she found that two of the mired bees had already flown off, while the rest of the bees stayed with their fallen sister cleaning her and showing support until she too was able to fly off on her own. It seemed such a powerful demonstration of caring, nurturing and unity, that I kept thinking about its meaning, which lead to the writing of this blog post, in hopes that it was something we could learn from.
Suddenly everything I was being shown was making more sense, that all these bee occurrences were focusing my attention on the fact that I needed to be paying deeper attention and that there was a lot I was being shown by these amazing little beings. Marlyn also mentioned it was critical to get honey from the bees closest to my home. I realized that it would work to help synch me to the land, flora and fauna here. This honey would uniquely carry the genetic blueprint of the local flowers growing in this earth to help acclimate me to my environment. This seemed so simple yet made perfect sense to me.
Thinking back of other beekeepers I have met, there has always seemed to be a common thread that ran through them, which was how and what the bees had taught them. They were truly different from most humans; they had become more open and were better able to discern and follow nature's path. I began to see how much I had to learn from all of nature's communities. It immediately brought back the wonder I was filled with whenever I had witnessed a murmuring of starlings. Seeing thousands of birds flying in unison as if lead by a single consciousness. Can we, as a species, also experience this unity? I think we can, but it would take a huge leap in consciousness to suddenly give up identifying with each of ourselves as "I" and enable us to be become a "We." It is on some level, frightening but so very freeing.
Beginning this transition could begin with something as simple as just eating the honey produced from the flowers closest to us. The earth has already figured out so many things for us, such as how we would naturally be supported and energized by the foods that come from the soil of our habitation. So simple, yet profound. It is designed to synch us to the planet. Even walking barefoot on the soil does this, as the earth itself is alive and aware of all its denizens and is desirous of interaction with us all. It is only we humans who are so blocked. I feel that there is now celebration, as a rapidly expanding portion of our population is awakening. I am proud to be a part of this community now experiencing this ascension in consciousness. Suddenly, millions are awakening to the love we each feel for our mother planet, the earth. So many are learning to listen to her messages, as they are everywhere. If we look with our hearts, we can see these messages too.

My own health regimen is largely based on my practice of T'ai Chi Ch'uan. This has helped expand my nature-based awareness. I particularly pay attention to the energies of earth and sky. When we become rooted to the earth and flow freely towards and into the sky, we are embodying the balance of yin and yang as seen when heaven sits above the earth, which is illustrated by the t'ai chi symbol.
The bees already know this as they move through the air of the heavens to collect the nectar from the plants that grow from this bountiful earth. No wonder they are so in balance with nature. In T'ai Chi Ch'uan, we call this balance the Tao and it is everywhere to be seen and joyfully felt. It is the state of balance achieved as the celestial heavens naturally reside over our earth.
In T'ai Chi Ch'uan we strive to connect with our bodies to this balance of heaven and earth, where our progress becomes evident simply in the joyousness of our existence. Certainly, the bees flying from flower to flower surrounded by such beauty experience the elation of these feelings. Here they show us, that we as well can fly, albeit in consciousness, with all of our brethren to experience the unity that is our birthright as constituents of the tribe of earth.
