Note from Russell Lewis:
I’m excited to be expanding my Down East Karate program next month! Thursday afternoons will now include Elementary Karate at 5:30 PM, Historical European Swordsmanship from 6:15–6:45 PM, and Middle/High School Karate at 6:45 PM. With adults coming soon!
I’ve been teaching martial arts for 36 years. I was born in Sea Level, with deep family roots in Cedar Island and Atlantic. My grandparents, Melvin “Junior” Styron and Georgia Golden, helped shape who I am, and my grandfather was actually my first martial arts teacher. He learned basic Judo while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and passed some of that knowledge on to me.
Some of my first lessons weren’t in a dojo. They were in his front yard in Atlantic and later while we were pulling crab pots in Cedar Island Bay. It was a little like The Karate Kid when Mr. Miyagi rocked the boat while fishing, except it was a little eight-year-old boy learning balance and Judo while pulling crab pots with his grandfather.
Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching thousands of students, winning 7 World Championships, 17 National Championships, and more than 200 state-level competitions, and training everyone from four-year-old Little Dragons to national-level Karate and Tae Kwon Do competitors and professional MMA fighters.
Now that I’ve moved back Down East, I’m proud to bring even more martial arts opportunities home. This community helped raise me, and it’s an honor to continue teaching here.
