Our Story

Monsignor Lawrence Miller created P*e Wee Basketball to develop confidence, enthusiasm, and a competitive spirit among children in the lower grades. After running successful P*e Wee Programs in both Jersey City and Scotch Plains, Monsignor Miller was transferred to St. Mary's in 1989. With support of a team of committed volunteers, including Charlie Dullea, Bob and Dee Bludgus, Vinnie Cannon and Ken Teschlog, St. Mary's City-Wide P*e Wee Basketball launched its first season in 1990. The P*e Wee's focus on building community and encouraging youth development is the core reason for its 28 years of success. The league is run entirely by Board Members and volunteers who give their time to assist in the refereeing, keeping score, running the refreshment stand and awards night, as well as, a weekly set up and take down for the games. The signature aspect of P*e Wee Basketball is the inclusion of young adults, students in grades 7-12, as the coaches and mentors for the boys and girls in grades 1-4. The majority of P*e Wee coaches played in the league themselves and return to pass on the tradition to new generation of young athletes. This 29th season of P*e Wee Basketball has called for changes in location and administration due to new guidelines being enforced throughout the Archdiocese of Newark. The heart of the program remains the same while the name and location will shift to Bayonne Recreation P*e Wee Basketball and Dennis P. Collins Park. We are extremely grateful to the city of Bayonne, Mayor James Davis, and Pete Amadeo the head of Bayonne Recreation for helping us in our time of need so we can continue this amazing league that Father Larry Miller founded. P*e Wee is eager to begin our 29th season with the new adjustments and looks forward to seasons to come!
