Bruin Basketball Summer Review:
Summertime is its very own season for our players. You have a new mix of guys playing together for the first time. Young men that are completely new to the program. New coaches, parents, players all trying to mix for the first time. Our first complete summer of expectations and teamwork with an entirely new football staff..... and our program rocked it! The whole thing.
We started with a need to find ways to pay for our summer camps. Grades 7-12 played over 140 games in June and that does not come free. The parents and players raised $2400 with our 3 on 3 basketball tournament that we have been asked to do again in the fall. There are so many parents that refereed or kept score, worked concessions, and kept the brackets rolling. What a fun event, and most of our players played or ref'd it themselves.
Then we had a couple parents that don't want the credit, donated $1250 each to help with camps. Another donated $500. We literally could not have done it without those donations. We had around 35 of our parents donate $100 each. Every single dime was needed to pay for these camps, which total over $8000. Thank you all so much for that.
Then, the camps started! Parents packed the busses with snacks for the overnights and away we went.
7th grade showed up in droves, almost every kid, every camp. What a great group with huge potential. We are so pleased with their grit and discipline. Welcome to the program.
Our 8th grade only got to go to one camp last year so this was pretty new for them even though they had been around. We have some young men there that were all in all summer. Both of these groups will have new head coaches that we are extremely excited about and have huge hearts for the growth of these young men.
The 9th graders love this game. They showed up and had two teams in everything we did. Many of them playing on multiple teams, including JV and Varsity. They got an incredible amount of opportunity this summer and it is already paying off.
The sophomores are the kind of workers that you build standards around, the entire group isn't scared to go to work.
We added some fire from the football program. We can't overstate the appreciation we have for those guys having each other's backs and willingness to do the hard stuff.
Then, you have our returning Juniors. Absolute program changing young men. They shy away from no work, they missed not a single day of summer camps, never called in tired for summer pride. 100% attendance and most of the time 100% effort.
We have had young men playing in Dallas and Atlanta on the weekend and right back at Pride Monday morning. We've got tons of guys on weekend teams, lots of them paying for personal training. Most of our guys at summer pride every day..... Then, our coaches.
Man, I don't know how we do all these things without an extremely dedicated group of coaches. Staying nights away from family, sleeping on air mattresses in gyms and classrooms. Lol. And doing it all for the love of the kids and the game.
It's takes everyone to make this special. Parents, players, coaches, standards, support from other programs and staff, administration, bus drivers..... It's been an incredible summer of growth. And we're just getting started.
