For a long time, I was afraid to eat more.
I was especially afraid to eat more carbohydrates because I thought eating less was the answer if I wanted to look leaner and more defined.
But when I started lifting heavier, I realized my body needed more fuel—not more restriction.
Carbohydrates give me energy for my workouts, while protein helps my muscles recover, repair, and grow. Eating more of both hasn’t stopped my progress. It has helped me feel stronger, perform better, and continue increasing my weights.
Today was Rear View—hamstrings, glutes, back, triceps, and a core burner to finish.
I focused on challenging weights, controlled reps, and good form. In my fifties, I’m not simply trying to complete another workout. I’m intentionally building and maintaining muscle, getting progressively stronger, and supporting the body I want for the years ahead.
But the workout is only part of that process.
After training, I had my protein waffle, followed by meals built around protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and vegetables. I make protein a priority throughout the day and include carbohydrates because my body needs both to train, recover, and build muscle.
I don’t lift heavy and then try to eat as little as possible anymore.
If I want more muscle, better definition, and greater strength, I need to fuel the body I’m asking to perform.
This is what strength training in my fifties looks like:
Challenging weights.
Plenty of protein.
Carbohydrates for energy.
Food that supports recovery.
Progressive strength.
Consistency.
Rear View complete—and yes, I’m celebrating the back, glutes, and triceps I’ve worked hard to build. 💪
