Good afternoon chess fans: Forty chess players turned out for our final chess tournament of the season (and also helped us celebrate National Jelly Bean Day) on April 22nd at the Jesup Memorial Library! There were surprising upsets, some squeakers on time, and a whole lot of fun and jelly beans!

As the dust settled, Tobias Coffey and Ezra Sassaman tied for first place in the US Chess Federation rated Open section with 3.5 wins out of 4 games each, followed by Isaiah Fallon with 3 wins. In the rated under 1000 section, Makayla Bouchard was unstoppable with a perfect 4 out of 4 wins, followed by Ben Freudig and Vivek Kohar with 3 wins each. In the rated under 500 section, Elam Monahan took home the first prize bucket of jelly beans with 3.5 wins, followed by Vishesh Kohar with 3 wins and Samuel Change and Jasper Cook tied for third place with 2.5 wins. And in the non-rated community section, tournament newcomers John Stadler, Andrew Hobbs, and Caleb Grass finished in the top three with 4, 3, and 3 wins, respectively. See the rated tournament cross table here: https://ratings.uschess.org/event/202604220013

Thanks to the Jesup Memorial Library for hosting and making this event amazing and free for all. And thanks to everyone who came out to or helped organize a Hancock County chess tournament over the past year and to folks who organized local chess clubs. Together we are building a chess community in Hancock County and we hope to do more next year, starting in the Fall. If you want to volunteer or have any ideas please drop us a line. In the meantime, have a great summer!

Best,

Dan

WE DID IT! Thanks to everyone who came out this afternoon (and any Sunday afternoon this chess season) to Choco-Latte in Bar Harbor for our youth chess club. Some weeks we had a handful of kids (and some adults) and others we had nearly two dozen players. It was our second season doing this and we capped it off with something we have never done before: a chess simultaneous exhibition or Simul! Seven kids faced off against Coach Ezra at the same time! We moved the tables in a circle around Ezra and he went from board to board without stopping - amazing chess stamina! Everyone played well and had fun!

We are pausing our Sunday chess club for the summer but keep practicing and we will see you again in the Fall! MDI Chess is hosting one last tournament before our summer break at the Jesup Memorial Library this Wednesday. For more info see: https://www.jesuplibrary.org/events/chess-2026
