Simple Birdie Off-Speed 🥎
A long time ago, I was taught that there was a difference between a change-up and an off-speed pitch.
A traditional change-up was considered a more drastic reduction in velocity—typically around 75–85% of fastball speed. An off-speed pitch, on the other hand, was thrown a little harder, usually 85–90% of fastball speed, sitting somewhere between the fastball and the change-up.
These days, the terms are often used interchangeably, and honestly, I'm okay with that.
One thing I've learned as a coach is that athletes perform best when they have ownership of their game. Giving pitchers the freedom to decide whether they want to throw their "change-up" or their "off-speed" in a game situation creates confidence and commitment. When a pitcher has a voice in the decision-making process, she's far more likely to trust the pitch and throw it with conviction.
At the end of the day, the best change of speed isn't about what you call it—it's about disrupting timing and throwing it with confidence.

I've never met an athlete who regretted the hours spent getting better. But I've met many who wished they had started sooner, worked harder, or stayed more consistent.

Train the movement. Trust the whip. Let the body do the work.

Internal rotation is the natural whipping action of the arm that occurs just before ball release. It allows energy generated from the ground, legs, hips, and torso to transfer efficiently through the arm and into the softball.
When timed correctly, internal rotation helps pitchers create more speed with less effort, improves efficiency, and reduces unnecessary stress on the shoulder and elbow. It's not about muscling the ball to the plate—it's about allowing the body to work as one connected system and letting the arm whip naturally through release.
