Let’s start with this… we’re still not entirely sure how we even made last night happen. 😂
Two weeks ago at Cottonwood Speedway, our car got destroyed through absolutely no fault of our own. One of the casualties was a shock that had to be shipped off for repairs. Unfortunately, thanks to a shipping mishap, it arrived later than expected, which meant racing last weekend was off the table. Instead, we took a much-needed break and headed to Eldora to watch The Dream.
Fast forward to this week…
Parts didn’t start showing up until Thursday, work was nonstop, and there was basically zero time to touch the race car. By Friday, our 11-year-old had to wash the car because neither of us had a spare minute. Friday night, Kody tried to get some work done but after a long week, exhaustion won.
Saturday morning started around 7:00 AM at the shop. Before we could even think about our own car, we had a mission: get Dusty’s Factory Stock put back together. Since he’s leading points at Southern, there was no way we wanted him missing the race.
So we spent the ENTIRE day building and installing a complete body on his car.
Around noon, Kody made a tire run so maybe, just maybe, we’d have a chance to work on our own car later.
By 5:00 PM, reality hit. There simply wasn’t enough time. We officially told everyone we weren’t racing.
Done.
Finished.
Over.
…Or so we thought.
At 7:30 PM, Dusty’s car was loaded and headed to the track, which happened to be under a rain delay. Since we still had the sheet metal brake sitting out, we figured we’d build the last deck panel for our car.
That’s when Kody looked at me and said:
“Maybe if we work really hard, we can make the tail end of the feature.”
If you know me, you can probably imagine the look I gave him. 😳😂
I was exhausted.
But if you know us, you know quitting isn’t really our thing.
We rolled into the driveway around 8:30 PM, jumped out of the truck, and went into full survival mode.
The to-do list was ridiculous:
✅ Install two deck panels
✅ Install the entire right side body and bracing
✅ Repair the spoiler
✅ Change gears
✅ smash and install shocks
✅ Install fenders
✅ Install filters
By 9:45 PM, somehow, some way, we were loaded up and headed to the track while they were still in intermission.
Covered in dirt, sweat, metal shavings, and probably smelling like every bad decision we’d made that day, we rolled into the pits around 10:15 PM, unloaded, and went straight to tech.
Since we signed in late and missed heats, we had to start at the tail of the field.
Honestly, we were just happy to be there.
But this race team apparently doesn’t understand the meaning of “take it easy.”
In a feature shortened to 12 laps because of curfew, Kody drove from 12th to 4th.
Not bad for a car that wasn’t even supposed to be at the track. 👊
And while we’re talking about impressive drives, Dusty started 15th and drove all the way to 6th in his feature.
Some nights you win.
Some nights you survive.
And some nights you spend all day saying you’re not racing, only to find yourself pulling into the track three hours later wondering how in the world you got there.
Last night was definitely one of those nights. ❤️💪🏼
