I had the opportunity to present the preliminary results of my graduate research at the TxDOT Environmental Conference! Got to bring home some silver hardware for the poster presentation.

My research explores whether fly fishers can serve as trained citizen scientists, collecting water-quality and macroinvertebrate data that can complement professional monitoring and help expand coverage of the Brazos River.

This project truly takes a village. A HUGE thank you to Laughingstock Fly Fishing, all of the incredible citizen scientist anglers and Tarleton students who have donated their time (and gotten a little wet, sweaty, and muddy!) to collect data, and Alex for supporting me through every wild research adventure.

This accomplishment belongs to all of us.

Laughingstock Fly Fishing rods are now available at Bonzer Fly & Supply in Weatherford, TX.

We’re honored to have our rods in a shop run by people who truly know the Brazos River, offer amazing fly fishing trips with J.d. Roberts and are passionate about helping anglers get on fish. If you’re in the area, stop by, check them out, and support an awesome local fly shop! Just make sure to give pets and scratches to Libby, the shop dog!

Thank you for sending us a “livestream” of her adventures with her new rod! Gabby is helping ID macroinvertebrates for Holli’s thesis project about the utilization of fly fishers to increase the spatial and temporal coverage of bioassessment data, focusing on the Brazos River. It was only fitting that she got a rod with a mayfly on the handle!

Built to fish, but hard not to admire.

This custom 4 wt dark green graphite rod features gold eyelets wrapped in rich brown thread for that clean, classic look. The handle and reel seat are hand-lathed from Texas Ebony wood by our own Alex Grant. It’s smooth, balanced, and one of a kind.

Paired with a traditional click-pawl reel, you get that crisp resistance and timeless sound that makes every cast and hookup feel right. It’s light, accurate, and honestly a deadly combo of precision and beauty on the water.

This build was a fun way to push our rod building limits—and now it’s ready for someone else to fish it.

Available for purchase. DM for details.

Loose tippet has a way of ending up everywhere—wrapped around boots, tangled in packs, or worse, left behind in the water. The Tippet Tomb is a simple, effective solution designed to keep your used line contained until you’re ready to dispose of it properly.

Built for life on the water, the Tippet Tomb attaches easily to your fly pack or vest and works with a quick twist. Just feed in your used tippet, rotate to bind and secure it, and keep fishing. When you’re done for the day, unscrew the chamber, trim the line, and discard it responsibly.

No tangles. No loose line. No impact left behind.

Features
• Twist-to-store design securely captures used tippet
• Compact and lightweight for easy carry on any pack or vest
• Quick-access design for use on the water
• Durable construction built for wet, rugged conditions
• Promotes responsible angling by reducing line waste in waterways

Why It Matters

Discarded fishing line can harm fish, birds, and other wildlife. The Tippet Tomb helps you keep every piece of line contained so you can fish confidently and leave the river better than you found it.

Over the past year I’ve been working on my graduate research at Tarleton State University focused on building a fly-fishing citizen science program on the Brazos River. The goal is simple: work with anglers and volunteers to help collect real ecological data from parts of the river that scientists rarely get to sample.

Fly fishers spend more time wading these rivers than almost anyone, and they’re perfectly positioned to help monitor water quality and aquatic insects that indicate river health.

We’ve had an incredible response from people wanting to volunteer, but one of the biggest challenges is getting the basic field supplies needed for each volunteer sampler.

If you’d like to support the project but can’t get out on the river with us, you can still help by purchasing materials from the Amazon list linked in the QR code on this graphic and on the link in bio.

Supplies like:
• Water testing kits
• Clipboards
• Thermometers
• Waterproof data sheets

These simple tools will go directly to volunteers collecting data along the Brazos River.

Every contribution helps us expand monitoring, train more volunteers, and build a better picture of river health in North Texas.

Thank you to everyone who has already offered to help, the response from the fishing and outdoor community has been amazing.

If you’re curious about the project or want to get involved, feel free to reach out!

We finally got the newest member of the Laughingstock fleet, our , out on some cooler Texas waters! 🛶
We picked up this little vessel to support Holli’s research using fly fishers to expand water-quality monitoring on the Brazos River… and, let’s be honest, to give us the perfect platform for testing out our custom rods. 😉
