AUSTIN DROPS OT HEARTBREAKER TO LINTON, 82-74 IN IHSAA 2A SEMI STATE AFFAIR.
Arnie Sgalio

The sands of the Austin Eagles magical hour glass ran out on it’s 2025-26 basketball campaign with a 82-74 overtime loss to the Linton Miners in IHSAA 2A semi state play.

But the finish in this back and forth affair will be talked about by the Eagle faithful for years to come.

Trailing 69-66 with 1.1 seconds to play Austin sophomore Tracen Roush hit a heavily contested trey off an inbounds pass from junior Braxton Barger. The ball dropped thru the net as time expired to send the game into overtime.

It was Roush’s final points before fouling out early in the extra period as he led all scorers with 32.

But even with freshman Micah Mohler’s 28 points and Barger’s 10, the Eagles still came up a bit short on Saturday (March 21) at the Southport Fieldhouse.

The loss snapped an eight game winning streak ending Austin’s season at 17-9. The Eagles became just the fourth team in school history to reach the semi state round of IHSAA 2A play.
Linton was paced by Reuben Goodman who had 26 points on eight treys while Paul Oliver added 24 points for the Miners.
Linton advanced to the semi state title game against Parke Heritage where the Miners were defeated 66-53 ending its season at 25-5.

Under the direction of second year head mentor Brent Jameson, Austin started the year 1-5 but finished 16-4 over its final 20 contests grabbing an IHSAA Sectional 45 title and a 2A Southern Regional crown in the process. Making it to the round of eight in 2A semi state play was the first time the Eagles had advanced that far into the tournament since the 2002 campaign.

Austin came into the game ranked 19th overall in the 2A ranks while Linton was 12th in the 2A Sagarin ratings.

Linton opened the game hitting its first four three-pointers and led 15-5 early. Austin would battle back to cut the deficit to three at one point, before ending the quarter trailing 22-17.

The Eagles offense started to settle in as Mohler had nine points and Roush had six on two 3-balls. Senior Tyler Collins broke into the scoring column with a deuce.

Both defenses dug in during the second period with just 19 total points combined. Austin would trail 22-21 on a bucket by Barger but would get no closer to the Miners. Linton led 32-26 at the break. The Eagles got its scoring from Mohler who had five points while Barger and Roush chipped in two each.

The Eagles came out firing in the second half as Roush and Mohler accounted for all 22 points. Austin went on a 13-5 run with Roush hitting three consecutive trifectas to grab a 39-37 lead, its first of the game. A Goodman trey for Linton put the Miners back on top momentarily before Mohler had five points while Roush added four to extend the Austin lead to 48-42. All told Roush had 15 points while Mohler had seven in the quarter.

After Barger opened the final stanza with a trey Roush would score six straight points on a driving layup and the ensuing free throw along with a trifecta pushing the Austin lead to nine points, 57-48.

But the Miners began its fourth quarter push as Goodman and Oliver combined for 22 points and five makes from behind the arc to grab the lead at 60-59. All told Linton outscored the Eagles 21-9 down the stretch.

In the final minute it appeared the Eagles would not be able to extend the game.

Mohler converted a three-point play putting Austin up 64-63. Oliver would retake the lead for Linton at 65-64 and after an empty Eagles possession Oliver was fouled on a rebound. He converted 1-of-2 from the line opening the door for Austin at 66-64.

Austin’s next possession had the Eagles missing a pair of free throws but junior Carter Hunley pulled in the Eagles biggest rebound of the game and was fouled trying to score. Hunley calmly registered his only points hitting both charity tosses tying the score at 66.

Linton grabbed the lead right back on its next possession. After Austin missed a three the Miners were fouled and converted one of two free throws to lead 69-66. Austin had a chance to tie the game but the Eagles turned the ball over with 1.6 seconds remaining on a difficult deep half court inbounds pass from Barger intended for Mohler.

Austin would get another shot as Roush drew an offensive foul on an illegal screen by Linton. The Eagles would then set in motion the play with 1.1 seconds on the clock that had Barger finding Roush for his game tying trey at the buzzer.

However, the overtime was all Linton as the Miners outscored the Eagles 13-5.

Barger hit a deep corner trey to give Austin a 72-69 lead, but the Miners would go on a 13-2 run to end the game. Barger had all five Austin points. Linton converted on 8-of-11 free throws in overtime and was 20-of-27 for the contest.

Roush was 11-of-19 (58%) from the field, including 7-of-12 (58%) from behind the arc for his 32 points and added five assists, two steals and a rebound. Mohler had a team high six boards along with five assists, a steal and block. Barger added five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Hunley had four rebounds and a steal while Collins had three boards and an assist. Senior Brayden Konkler had two rebounds.

The teams combined for 23 treys as Linton had 12 and Austin 11. Austin shot 51% from the field compared to 46% for Linton.

The Miners out rebounded the Eagles 26-23 and were a plus five in the turnover department forcing 13 while committing eight.
The Eagles will say goodbye to three seniors who have been key to the development of the Austin program over the years.

Tyler Collins, Brayden Konkler and Orlando Neace will be missed for their contributions both on and off the court. Through hard work, leadership and fellowship this trio helped establish a new era in Austin basketball setting expectations high for future Eagle teams.
