KROC Water Fitness

KROC Water Fitness Water Fitness is for all levels of fitness. Those who are looking for a safe environment to exercise, lose weight or who need to rehabilitate.

Water fitness has many health benefits for exercisers. Buoyancy decreases the effects of gravity reducing weight bearing or compression of joints. Hydrostatic pressure can decrease swelling and pressure.

IMPROVED MUSCLE STRENGTH

Water is fluid. It is in constant motion. When a participant gets in the pool, the water moves in multiple directions simultaneously and presses against the body.Water is also dense. It is denser then air by a long shot and much more difficult to maneuver through. The physical properties of water make exercising in the water a unique experience. These water elements help to create a challenging fitness and strength workout.

How many people participate in aquatic exercise in the United States?
Based on 2004 American Sports Data Surveys published May 2005 approximately 5.8 million people in the US participate in aquatic exercise. The breakdown for geographic regions of the United States is as follows:
Northeast – 651,000
North Central – 1.35 million
South – 2 million
West – 2 million
There was a 33% increase in participation in one year in aquatic fitness exercise.

Often aquatic exercise participants complain about muscle soreness in the calves. What causes this?
Muscle soreness may be related to dehydration or poor body mechanics. Hydration is important during exercise, even aquatic exercise, to maintain fluids lost during the workout through sweating. (Yes, we do sweat during water exercise but it is not as obvious as the pool water keeps one cool and washed the sweat away.) Adequate fluid replacement will prevent dehydration; even mild dehydration may cause muscle cramping. Poor body mechanics might also cause muscle cramps, in particular in the lower legs. The buoyancy of the water may cause participants to remain on their toes rather then pressing the heels down during each foot placement. Wearing shoes will often assist with correct foot placement. Also, if the water is too deep (above arm pit depth), participants will have a tendency to remain on the balls of the feet throughout class. Encourage proper water depth, wearing shoes, landing on the balls of the feet and rolling through to the heels with impacting exercises, and drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise. Final Note – don’t forget to stretch all the muscles trained during the session…including the gasctrocnemius and soleus (calf muscles

How many calories do you burn in a typical shallow water workout class?
The following information is adapted from the article How Many Calories? (June M. Lindle-Chewning, M.A., AEA Research Council)

Just as on land, there are several variables that affect caloric consumption during vertical water exercise. Variables include:
1. Water depth (affects weight bearing, control of movement and the amount of water resistance)
2. Speed of movement (affects the amount of drag and resistance)
3. Amount of force applied against the water’s resistance
4. Length of the person’s limbs
5. Environmental factors such as water temperature, air temperature, humidity, etc.
Obviously, the harder you work, the more calories you burn. How many calories do you burn? In the proper conditions, with proper motivation to work, it looks like approximately 400 to 500 calories per one-hour class is a reasonable estimate.

To casual observers, water aerobics might look like a no-impact sport. Although water aerobics might burn less calories per hour than kick boxing, it is an excellent fitness activity for people of all age groups and abilities. When a body moves, it burns extra calories and exercise of any kind has h...

Did you know that muscle imbalance in strength and flexibility or both can affect the integrity of the joint? Water promotes muscle balance by providing resistance for both muscles in a pair, in both directions of movement.

Sarcopenia- What is it? Better known as age-related muscle loss. Without progressive resistance training to develop and maintain muscle strength and endurance, a person can begin losing lean muscle tissue as early as one's 30's. Benefits of a well-rounded strength program: improved self efficacy, metabolism, sleep patterns, decreased fatigue, reduces depression and anxiety, reduces arthritic and lower back pain, and improves balance and flexibility.
