🎉 Another Small Town with a BIG Announcement!

Congratulations to the Town of Exeter, New Hampshire population 16,200), on launching its foam (Styrofoam®) recycling program using a patented Foam Cycle containerized recycling system!

It’s always amazing to see how small towns across America find ways to pool their financial and physical resources to get important recycling projects off the ground.

Why is that?

The answer is simple: good people.

Communities like Exeter, New Hampshire, are fortunate to have dedicated professionals like Kristen Murphy, the Town's Conservation and Sustainability Planner, and her team. They aren't afraid to roll up their sleeves, open bags, process foam, and do the work required to build and operate a successful recycling program. No automation here, folks, just good old-fashioned hard work that leads to something you can truly be proud of.

Real progress happens when people move beyond discussion and take action.

Congratulations again to Kristen, her team, and the residents of Exeter, New Hampshire, for proving that where there is commitment, leadership, and determination, there is always a way.

Here are just a few comments from local residents:

✅ "Brilliant creative recycling! Let's think outside the box and see what else we can do."

✅ "Every transfer station should have one!"

✅ "This is awesome!!!!"

✅ "Fantastic and inspiring project. If there is space, please consider sharing regionally."

A special thank you to the Foam Recycling Coalition (FRC) for partially funding this project. Time and again, the FRC identifies the right partners to demonstrate that foam products—including both food-service foam and protective packaging foam can be successfully recycled and manufactured into new products.

The proof is now on display in Exeter.

The question is: Is your town next?

The stage is set…🌎

This Earth Day, Nashville will launch the first patented Foam Cycle system in the state of Tennessee, which is music to the ears of the city’s 712,000 residents!

Both #6 food service foam and packaging foam (aka Styrofoam) will be accepted at the city’s East Convenience Center. From there, the material will be densified and shipped to end-user manufacturers, where it will be turned into new products that can be recycled again and again, creating a truly unique and impactful circular recycling program.🔃

This program is the result of a lot of time, effort, and collaboration that wouldn’t be possible without the support of a dedicated group of foam manufacturers known as the Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA), along with a committed team at Nashville Department of Waste Services.

This program is kind of like a great manager teaming up with a great singer and a solid backup band… Y’all in Nashville know what I’m talking about.

♻️ From Waste Foam to New Frames: Closed-Loop Recycling

Here’s how Foam Cycle turns used foam into new products like picture frames:

1️⃣ 📍Collection: Clean foam packaging is dropped off at participating recycling locations instead of going to the landfill.

2️⃣ 🔧 Densification: The foam is compressed at up to a 90:1 ratio, removing the air and transforming it into dense blocks called ingots.

3️⃣ 🔄Manufacturing: Those ingots become raw material for new products, including durable picture frames.

🌱 Closed-Loop: And when those products reach end-of-life? They can be recycled again, keeping foam in a continuous, closed loop instead of in a landfill.

Small material. Big impact.

♻️ “Huge Success” in Action

The headline says it all: Long Hill's Styrofoam program continues to be “huge success.”

In Long Hill Township, the Department of Public Works processed 15 tons of Styrofoam in 2022 using a Foam Cycle machine. The program is still going strong, with thousands of pounds recycled each year. 💪

Instead of heading to a landfill, foam dropped off by residents is densified and turned into reusable material for new products.

That’s what real, local circular economy looks like. 🔄

Communities don’t need bigger landfills. They need better recycling systems.

Thanks to grant funding from the Foam Recycling Coalition (FRC), more communities across the United States and Canada are expanding access to foam packaging recycling—commonly known as Styrofoam. ♻️

📅 The 2026 FRC grant application period opened on March 5, 2026, and runs through April 17, 2026, with grant recipients expected to be announced in late spring or early summer.

These grants help municipalities and recycling programs establish convenient drop-off locations where residents can recycle foam packaging materials that cannot be placed in curbside recycling bins.

Accepted items typically include:

• Foam meat trays
• Egg cartons
• Take-out food containers
• Plates and cups
• Protective packaging such as foam coolers
• Appliance packaging
• Large molded foam used to ship furniture, electronics, and household appliances 📦

Once collected, the foam is reduced, recycled, and turned into new products that support a circular economy.

Since 2017, Foam Cycle has helped 17 municipal and nonprofit recycling drop-off centers across the country secure more than $850,000 in foam recycling grant funding, helping launch successful foam recycling programs.

Wonder where Foam Cycle systems actually live? 🗺️💡

Our recycling solutions are installed at real community points where foam waste is collected and processed, such as:

📍 Municipal recycling drop‑off centers
📍 City & county recycling facilities
📍 Universities & campus recycling hubs
📍 Other centralized collection locations across the U.S.

These locations give residents a real option for foam recycling, not just throwing it away. 🧑‍🤝‍🧑♻️

Once loose foam becomes a dense block, what next? 🤔➡️🧱

The compressed polystyrene, called an ingot, has practical reuse value. It can be sold or repurposed as feedstock in manufacturing, helping keep materials in a circular economy. 🌎💼

These ingots go into products like picture frames, interior moldings, insulation, and more — meaning the foam gets a second life instead of a landfill ending. 🏭🔄

So HOW does foam go from bulky waste to something valuable? 🤯

Foam Cycle systems use densification. This is a process that removes most of the air from expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam and compacts it into dense blocks called ingots. 🧱✨

This can reduce foam volume by up to 90:1, meaning 90 bags of loose foam become 1 solid block that’s easy and cost‑effective to store and transport — and actually recyclable. ♻️

💬Did you know densification can shrink foam so drastically?
