Zawadi knows what it means to turn pain into power. Spiraled out of her middle-class life by domestic violence, she’s survived the trauma of abuse , grief, and the heart-breaking homelessness that followed. Wounds so deep she stopped speaking. Just as she was planning to take her life, she found the Urban Possibilities empowerment program and credits it with being the CPR that breathed purpose and passion back into her life. It also helped restore her voice, which now inspires everyone who hears it.
Today, Zawadi is a chief spokesperson for Urban Possibilities Empowerment program and through it has become a writer, spoken word artist, motivational speaker and published author. She also serves as the program’s chief mentor guiding others on the road to a comeback and takes the stage spreading awareness about the humanity of the underserved and the importance of empowerment education. Advocates for dignified housing and the rights of survivors of domestic violence within and beyond Urban Possibilities
Her powerful pieces “My Name is Forgotten” and “Help Me Find My Voice” have garnered standing ovations in Urban Possibilities shows from San Jose to South LA including Aon Corporation, New York Film Academy, the John Stewart Company Northern and Southern Regional Conferences, and Poets & Writers Annual “Connecting Cultures”, a showcase of Los Angeles’ most exciting writers. Her work was also the inspiration for a volunteer drive to collect hygiene kits for homeless women in San Francisco that has reached 300 thus far. Norma is highlighted in the Sept/Oct 2017 issue of Poets & Writers magazine on newsstands.
