Born in British Guyana in 1886, young James made an arduous journey to Liverpool as a teenage stowaway.

Known for his athletic prowess, James shone brightly in swimming, running, and boxing. Yet, he was more than just an outstanding athlete. His bravery led him to save numerous lives by pulling people from the perilous waters of the River Mersey and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

James was not just a lifesaver but also a life-shaper. He dedicated his time to teaching kids to swim and building a stronger, safer community.

2008 saw the unveiling of a plaque in his honor at the Liverpool Aquatics Centre in Wavertree, cementing his legacy as a beloved local hero and exceptional sportsman.

Born and raised with a love for water sports, Max has not only left an indelible mark in the world of water polo but has also inspired many, including his siblings, to dive into the world of swimming and water polo.’

Inspired by Genai Kerr, another trailblazer in the field, Irving went on to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, further solidifying his place in the sport's history.

Along with teammate Ashleigh Johnson, the first African-American woman on the U.S. Olympic women's water polo team, Max is trying to challenge stereotypes and rewrite narratives for black people in aquatics.

Max's story is a testament to the power of self-belief and the importance of representation in aquatics and society.

Here's to Max Irving, a champion and a true hero in promoting diversity in aquatics.

Today's Black Aquatics story is a celebration of the legendary achievements of Charles "Charlie the Tuna" Chapman, a true trailblazer in the world of swimming!

Born in 1954, this extraordinary distance swimmer stole the spotlight with his remarkable butterfly stroke 🏅

In 1981, he became the first Black swimmer to conquer the English Channel, setting a high bar for athletes worldwide. Charlie amazed again in 1988 by swimming not once, but TWICE around Manhattan Harbor! 🌇

Taking on the challenging 28.5-mile marathon, he showcased his indomitable spirit and tenacity. Then, in 1997, he achieved another milestone, becoming the first person to swim twice around Alcatraz Island, departing from San Francisco!

Today, we honor his outstanding legacy that continues to inspire swimmers to step out of their comfort zones and make waves 🌊
