DOVE AND QUAIL ALERT🚨 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 we have just picked up an incredible dove and quail spot for the upcoming season close to Big Spring, Texas. With all the abundant rain we have got the quail population will explode this year! I drove the ranch with owners last week and the insane amount of quail we flushed was crazy. Bobs and blues which is hard to find!

Multiple dove fields with water on property and feed all around! Absolute crazy amount of dove numbers!

Do a day hunt or book multiple trips out. Guide will be present. Smaller groups will be combined since fields are so big.

Let’s get y’all on the books and make some memories!

The early outlook for dove season in West Texas looks cautiously decent to good, especially compared to some rough drought years recently.

A few key things are lining up in hunters’ favor:

* Spring rains in parts of West Texas and the Rolling Plains improved soil moisture and w**d growth, which helps seed production for mourning doves.
* April and May storm activity around the South Plains and Permian Basin brought scattered moisture that should help native feed like sunflower, croton, and dovew**d in areas that caught rain.
* Texas A&M AgriLife notes that doves respond really well to early successional plants and open feeding areas after moisture years.

The concern is Far West Texas is still pretty dry overall. Long-term drought hasn’t fully broken in the Trans-Pecos and western Panhandle, so bird numbers there could stay spotty unless summer rains continue.

Region-by-region, I’d expect:

* Around the Rolling Plains / eastern Panhandle: potentially solid mourning dove numbers if summer moisture holds.
* Permian Basin: average to slightly above average in pockets that caught spring storms.
* Trans-Pecos / far West Texas: still hit-or-miss due to lingering drought.
* Around irrigated ag and feed lots: should still be dependable regardless of native conditions.

White-wing numbers should continue trending strong across much of Texas.

Blue quail update for West Texas 🪶

We’re in the offseason right now, but things are looking pretty encouraging heading into the next year.

Coming out of the 2025–26 season, blue quail numbers across West Texas were above average, especially in the Trans-Pecos and the western High Plains. Around the Permian Basin, we’ve been seeing a steady upward trend with more birds on the landscape than we’ve had in a while.

A big reason for that was timely summer rains last year, which helped with nesting and brood survival. More pairs, more broods, and even some extended nesting activity — all good signs.

That said, it’s still West Texas… everything hinges on rain. If we get decent moisture this spring and summer, we could be looking at another really solid year. If it turns hot and dry, things can drop off quick.

Bottom line: we’re in a positive cycle right now, but boots-on-the-ground scouting will still make or break your season.

Pray for rain 🙏
