Meet the Vice Chair of the board of DGFC (Disc Golf for a Cause)
My name is #63738 (Josh Cook), the Vice President of Disc Golf for a Cause. Over the past 6-7 years disc golf has become not just a major part of my life, but a way of life. The people I have met, the places I have seen, and the growth I have experienced through the great game of disc golf have helped to mold the person I am today.
What is DGFC to you?
Brian Evans and I met at a league at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Twp. Michigan. We share many similar interests including the love of the game of disc golf. In 2014 I launched Broken Oak Disc Golf, a club out of Leonard Michigan that Mr. Evans was always a strong supporter of. As a club we organized and commissioned many events including weekly leagues, team competitions, course design and construction, and multiple sanctioned tournaments. Broken Oak Disc Golf is also a sponsor and partner of Disc Golf for a Cause (DGFC). Brian and I became partners of sorts for all type of disc golf activity on and off the course. When he approached me with his idea for The Hangover Bowl, the annual charity event hosted by DGFC, I was instantly on board. After a few years of incredible success with the Hangover Bowl, Evans created DGFC as a way to broaden our scope and increase our footprint in the community. When he asked me to be the Vice President of the group I jumped all over the offer. I am very excited to be part of such a unique, well-constructed organization. The sky is the limit for all of the good that DGFC can bring the community
What’s your disc golf story? How did you discover the sport?
As a kid I spent almost all of my time outdoors playing baseball, football ,building forts, catching crayfish in the stream, and doing anything else involving getting dirty outside. Baseball had always been my number one passion as I intended to play for the Detroit Tigers and have Ernie Harwell call my name on the local broadcast every evening. Around the age of 15 I had a stunning realization that professional baseball was "just a bit outside" my reach as a realistic career path, so I began working for my Father's tree care company. 26 years later I am still in the tree service industry, yet my dream to be a professional athlete is still alive. In the late 90's I threw my first ever golf disc and instantly lost said disc, but also instantly fell in love. Throughout my 20's I spent most of my time working and partying so I only played disc golf casually a handful of times a year usually with a backpack filled with 1-2 discs and a case of beer. It wasn't until 2013 that I ditched the case of beer and began to fill my bag with more and more discs. This is when the sport really started to become a lifestyle for me. . In June of 2018 my dream of becoming a professional athlete came true. I registered for the Great Lakes Open on the Disc Golf Pro Tour. Playing golf and rubbing elbows with some of the greatest players in the world, I walked away with unforgettable memories and a massive slice of humble pie. I did play hard enough to not finish last!
