Hi friends! Our group lead, Nicole, is out of town currently so here’s just a quick post so you can save the dates!

More details for each of these events will be shared in early September. Note: we did move up the time for the Tuesday evening runs since it just started to get dark a little earlier. We want people to feel comfortable finishing their runs, and not feel they have to rush before it gets dark.

See you soon🤗

Can we please get a round of applause for our new beautiful tent from Action Sports Canopies 🙌🙌🙌.

⛈️And it came in handy at last evening’s run as we huddled underneath it waiting for the pouring rain to pass. If you were wondering if we ran or cancelled again last night due to the weather…we did have to wait it out a bit, but we braved the last droplets and started our run at 7 pm. By 7:05 pm, the rain had completely stopped and the Loop Challenge was on.

🏃🏽‍♀️We ended up with a four way tie! We had four people complete the same number of loops, and the rest of us just enjoyed our casual run at the beautiful park. Shout out to for the prize packs for our winners!

✅As a fyi…September’s events will be posted shortly, but with our group lead, Nicole, on trips at the beginning AND end of Sep we will only have 3 events next month. Hope to see you there!

REMINDER: Our rescheduled 1 Mile Loop Challenge is this Thursday, 8/20!

⭐️1 Mile Loop Challenge
🗓️Thursday, Aug 20 at 6:30 pm
📍Academy Hills Park, 9709 Layton Ave NE, ABQ.
🛝Meet near the playground. You can look for our new NWR tent.
🚽No bathrooms at this location unfortunately, so use it before you leave the house.
🚙 It’s all street parking, and the park is popular so plan a few extra minutes in case you have to park down a side street and walk over.
✅This run was originally scheduled for July, but was cancelled due to lightning. Folks were looking forward to it, so we are bringing it back for August!
💦Borrow your kids’ super soakers because for every loop finished you can soak your friends.
🙋🏽‍♀️Don’t worry….there will be an opt-out option for those who don’t want to get wet.
🤕Recovering from an injury, but still want to join in the fun?! We would LOVE to have you. You can help with sign-in as folks arrive, at the water zone, or cheer for the runners as they finish their loops.

FREE to attend. Your fam and friends are welcome to join 🤗.

Yesterday, several of our runners had the opportunity to join the group doing the 2nd Mt Taylor 50k course preview. It was a beautiful day in the mountains, so pretty, no rain (unlike last time when we got poured on), and lots of fun encouraging each other up the mountain.

⛰️Mt Taylor, or Tsoodził as it is called in Navajo, is a sacred mountain to many Pueblos, including Acoma and Zuni (to name a few) and the Navajo Nation. For our Native runners, it was a meaningful time on the mountain with many stopping at different times to give thanks and offer prayers.

❤️And what a privilege to share this experience with some of Running Medicine friends. For the group picture, we grabbed all the Natives that attended so if we missed mentioning your group, please let us know in the comments.

🫶Heartfelt thanks to the mttaylor50k race directors and crew who put together this course preview run and the one in July. There was about 60 people in total out there on Saturday, so it was fun to meet and run with some folks we didn’t yet know.

✅And the last shout out goes to all the runners who completed Saturday’s run. We completed about 14.8 miles with over 3500 ft of elevation gain. And since the entire course is above 9,000 ft…this one was tough (the quads may be a little sore today). But we are and thanks to the course preview runs….we now feel ready for the big 50k dance in September. See you there!

UPDATE: Due to availability, we have moved next week’s 1 Mile Loop Challenge to Thursday, 8/20 (previously scheduled for Tues, 8/18).

For continuity, we kept all the events listed even though two of them have now passed.

We have August Events Details! We are trying something new, getting in a hike, hitting the mountain for a big day, and trying the 1 Mile Loop Challenge again. All the details are below…

⭐️Morning Xpress 5k
🗓️Tues, Aug 4. We are starting this run exactly at 6 am, so plan to meet up by 5:50 am.
📍Tramway Recreation Trail. This is the paved path that runs next to Tramway Blvd.
🚙Park at W L Jackson Park on Cedar Hill Rd. It’s right on the corner of Tramway, so easy access to start our run.
✅We are trying something new with this early AM run! We are calling it “Xpress” because we will have snacks and the group photo before the run and runners are welcome to leave just as soon as they’re done.

⭐️Group Hike, 5.3 miles
🗓️Sat, Aug 8th at 8 am.
📍10K North Trailhead on the east side of the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque . This trail is up the mountain, sitting at 10,000 ft.
⛰️Great opportunity to get out of town and hike the beautiful 10k trail. This is a nice green hike in the woods with a rewarding view at the top.

⭐️Mt Taylor 50k Course Preview, around 16.8 miles
🗓️Sat, Aug 15 at 8 am
📍Mt Taylor (above Grants, NM). Rock Tank (start/finish area).
⛰️This course preview is led by the race organizers of the Mt Taylor 50k. You can find all the info about the location on the Mt Taylor website.

We were a small but mighty hiking crew this morning, and we even had 3 ladies who came out for the first time.

☀️And what a beautiful day on the trail. Despite the bees in the parking lot (never have seen that many…they’ve must’ve come out to welcome us) this was a fun hike on the mostly tree covered trail. FYI….10k North Trail is also a great one to revisit at the end of September to see the Aspens changing color.

🥾It’s always fun introducing new trails to people and meeting all the dogs along the way. We chatted work, favorite hikes, and feasts! Almost all us were at Jemez feast last weekend and we didn’t even know it! Aha…

⛰️We are already looking forward to next month’s hike. But we haven’t decided on the trail yet, so let us know in the comments what Albuquerque area hike that you would love to do.

Let’s get out of town and go for a hike in the mountains! This is your chance to head up to 10,000 ft and hike the beautiful 10k trail. All the details below:)

⭐️Group Hike, 5.3 miles
🗓️Sat, Aug 8th at 8 am.
📍10K North Trailhead on the east side of the Sandia Mountains outside of Albuquerque, NM.
📈Elevation gain = 800 ft
💦Bring water and snacks you can carry on the hike.
⛰️This trail is up the mountain, sitting at 10,000 ft (ABQ sits at around 5,300 ft.), so you may be thirstier and hungrier than you normally are at lower elevation hikes. (That’s code for bring extra water and snacks!)
⛰️This is a nice green hike in the woods with a rewarding view at the top. Much of the trail has tree cover, but there are spots that pop out in the sun.
🚽Toilets are available at the trailhead, but no running water.
🚙You can put 10k trail into Google Maps for directions.
☕️Need caffeine on the way in? Make a stop at Cabra Coffee in Cedar Crest to fuel up.

TRAIL RUN OPTION
🏃🏽‍♀️Those training for the Mt Taylor 50k in September may wish to run the trail ahead of the hikers. OR you can hike with us and then afterward go across the street and run the 10k South trail. If you do both trails, it’s around 10 miles, and you can use your car as a personal aid station.
⚠️Note: trail runners should plan to be self-supported since the main group will only be hiking the 10k North Trail.

We tried something new this morning with our Morning Xpress 5k, and we had 4 new runners come out for it!

☀️The summer heat has been 🥵 punishing lately, so thought we would try the Tramway Recreation Trail at 6 am. Since the sun is still behind the mountains that early, we knew even if the air was warm at least we wouldn’t get baked into little fry bread.

🏃🏽‍♀️Turns out, it was a comfortable time to run! So, I think we will try another early AM run next month.

🤗Thank you to everyone who came, and it was so nice to meet all of our first-timers. We hope to see you back.

✅What’s next? Well, we have our 10k hike planned for this Sat, Aug 4. Check our next post for all the details.
